This Underrated California Lake Wilderness Is A Backpacking Gem Full Of Glorious Pines

If you are the kind of person who loves the smell of pine needles after rain or taking a dip in tranquil lakes, you must visit Dinkey Lakes Wilderness. Tucked into California's Sierra National Forest, this underrated gem is one of the top must-visit destinations around the world for Avid hikers. You'll get a chance to hike through wildflower-filled meadows and swim in beautiful lakes while enjoying the quiet.

Dinkey Lakes Wilderness spans over 30,000 acres and is located on the eastern boundary of California near the Sierra Nevada, about 70 miles east of Fresno. It is a two-hour drive from Fresno through Highway 168 and toward Shaver Lake before getting to the trailheads in Dinkey Creek or Courtright Reservoir. If you prefer to fly in, you will land at Yosemite International Airport and then rent a car or take a taxi to Dinkey Lakes (about 70 miles away). 

In the late 1800s, the area was a popular spot for sheep herders and was named after a dog that fought off a bear. While the dog died, the name "Dinkey" lived on. In 1984, the U.S. Congress designated the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness to preserve nature and the lakes.

Dinkey Lakes Wilderness offers the ultimate backpacking adventure for trailblazers and outdoor enthusiasts. The underrated adventure destination in North America is home to hiking trails leading you to the surrounding mountains and forests. For example, the Dinkey Lakes Trail is a 6.8-mile loop that passes through four alpine lakes. While getting to the trailhead at Willow Meadow can be challenging, as you need a 4WD vehicle at the start, it is a fun hike that takes you to lush forests and a snowmelt cascade. 

The hike starts with a descent to Dinkey Creek, where you will cross the small stream and pass through lodgepole pines as you continue uphill to the shores of Mystery Lake. Continue on a steady climb following the trail to Swede Lake, where you can rest on the shoreline surrounded by pine trees and mountain hemlocks. Or, head downhill to South Lake, where you can camp in the backcountry. After passing South Lake Creek, First Dinkey Lake is a few miles away. You can also continue downhill to Willow Meadow if you are still feeling adventurous.

If it is your first time backpacking, you can try the Mystery Lake Trail. It is a short 3.2-mile hike from the Shaver Lake trailhead and takes less than one and a half hours. Your furry friend can tag along on a leash as you explore the forests and Shaver Lake. For backpackers who wish to spend days in the backcountry, the Dinkey Lakes via Mystery Lake Trail is a multi-day adventure that allows you to discover many lakes and pine forests. This 18.9-mile trail passes through alpine lakes, such as Swede Lake, Mystery Lake, Cliff Lake, Second Dinkey Lake, and Rock Lake. For those who love sleeping under the stars, you can spend the night at the many campsites along South Lake and Swede Lake.

While Dinkey Lakes Wilderness is remote, there are many destinations nearby that offer some of the best breathtaking views in the U.S. to add to your bucket list. For instance, the Courtright Reservoir, located outside the Wilderness boundary, is a popular stop. This reservoir is about 8,170 feet in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, providing beautiful views of the surrounding peaks. If kayaking or boating is your thing, you can kayak through the coves and inlets as you soak in the natural beauty of the area. The reservoir is a famous fishing destination for anglers. Some of the fish you can catch include kokanee salmon and brown trout.

Shaver Lake is another fun destination about one hour west of Dinkey Lakes Wilderness. You can relax at Shaver Lake Marina as you enjoy the stunning views of the boats on the dock. If you want to spend time on the water, rent a boat at the marina and explore. When you are ready for a bite, visit Shaver Lake Pizza, a family-owned restaurant.
