Missouri's Deepest Lake Has A Golden, Sandy Beach And Pristine Blue-Green Water For Swimming
Missouri is home to some of the most beautiful lakes in the Midwest, each with its own special allure. But only one aquatic destination in the Show Me State plunges to a jaw-dropping depth of 220 feet, and that would Table Rock Lake, a 40,000-acre reservoir spanning the Missouri-Arkansas border, around an hour's drive south of Springfield. For sure, it can't compete with the world's deepest lakes, which are bottomless pits by comparison at thousands of feet deep. But Table Rock Lake is considerably deeper than Missouri's other aquatic gems. Lake of the Ozarks, for example, maxes out at a depth of 130 feet, while the state's largest body of water, Truman Lake, is only around 80 feet at its deepest.
Besides its unusual depth, Table Rock Lake has a few other remarkable qualities. It's Missouri's clearest lake, with visibilities of 15 to 20 feet on a calm day. It's also known for its striking, blue-green color. In a study by car-rental company Sixt, Table Rock Lake was actually ranked No. 25 on the list of bluest-water locations across the U.S., beating out spots like Waianapanapa State Park in Maui (No. 35) and California's Santa Monica Beach (No. 43). Imagine: a pristine, Caribbean-blue oasis smack dab in the middle of the Ozark Mountains, in one of America's most land-locked states!
Long, bright Table Rock Lake is framed by lush hills and limestone bluffs, creating a picture-perfect setting for outdoor recreation. With dozens of resorts, campgrounds, parks, swimming areas, and boat launches scattered around its shoreline plus amenities galore nearby in Branson, it's no wonder that Traveller's Worldwide voted Table Rock Lake America's No. 1 lake in 2026.
Playing in and on the colorful water at Table Rock Lake
Many flock to Table Rock Lake to splash in its sparkling waters on hot summer days. One of the best places to do this is at Moonshine Beach, with its golden arc of sand, protected swimming cove, and amenities such as bathrooms, showers, a boat ramp, a playground, and sport and picnic facilities. Because this is the only sandy beach on the lake, it can get crowded though, so arrive early to secure your spot. It's also recommended to wear water shoes when swimming to protect feet from the rocky bottom. Moonshine Beach is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. from mid-May through mid-September, and it's conveniently located on the east side of Table Rock Lake, only a 20-minute drive from downtown Branson.
Other swimming areas can be found 3-miles south of Moonshine Beach in Table Rock State Park or 10 miles northwest at the Indian Point Public Use Area. Though these locations lack sand, they provide more tranquil settings for leisurely soaking. For a deeper immersion into Table Rock Lake, scuba diving is also popular here, with opportunities to explore submerged features like a double-decker excursion boat, an oak grove, and structures from a town that flourished prior to the reservoir's creation.
With around 800 miles of shoreline to discover on Table Rock Lake, boating is another favorite pastime here. More than a dozen public marinas and several dozen boat launches are dispersed around the lake, facilitating access to the lake from various directions. Area marinas and other outfitters rent everything from canoes, kayaks ,paddleboards, and paddleboats to engine-powered wave runners, ski boats, pontoon boats, and catamarans, ensuring that boaters of all stripes can get out on the water to play, paddle, float and, if angling appeals, fish for trophy bass, crappie, catfish, and other freshwater fish.
Other things to do at Table Rock Lake and in nearby Branson
The trails at Table Rock State Park provide a wonderful introduction to some of the beautiful ecosystems and wildlife found along the lakeshore. The 4.5-mile out-and-back Table Rock Lakeshore Trail traces the shoreline from the State Park Marina to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Dewey Short Visitor Center near the Table Rock Dam, through glades and woodlands peppered with 200-year-old oaks. The lake views are lovely from this trail, and it's common to see bald eagles, loons, and ospreys here during winter. The White River Valley Trail System is also accessible via the state park, providing around 11 miles of routes of varying difficulty across four different loops for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking.
Table Rock State Park is also home to two year-round campgrounds for tents and RVs with amenities including bathrooms, showers, electricity, water, and a camp store. More than 10 other campgrounds are located along the lake in addition to quaint cottages, comfortable vacation home rentals, and full-service lakefront resorts for those who prefer traditional accommodations.
For those who like their nature with some civilization on the side, Table Rock Lake and Branson are a winning combination. This thriving Missouri resort town is a great destination for couples and families who want a little bit of everything, from a dazzling array of restaurants and shops to live entertainment, museums, and the top-ranked amusement park in the Midwest: Silver Dollar City. Together, the lake and its adjacent town provide year-round recreation, with aquatic fun in summer, brilliant fall foliage in autumn, indoor shows and festive holiday celebrations in winter, and pleasant temperatures ideal for golf, hiking, and other outdoor adventures come springtime.
