Two Of America's Newest Airport Terminals Are Among The World's Most Beautiful In 2026

There's a special kind of thrill that some travelers feel the moment they arrive at the airport. When you pull up to the terminal and unload your bag, it will finally begin to feel like your vacation is about to begin and the journey that has yet to unfold is at last within reach. Contrary to the magical feeling of starting a new journey, many airports are drab and utilitarian. Unlike old train stations that were designed to feel beautiful and luxurious, many modern airports were built to be functional as opposed to aesthetically pleasing. That being said, there are a few airports around the world that are destinations in and of themselves. Pittsburgh International Airport and Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport stand apart from the rest when it comes to design, and they were recently named two of the most beautiful airports in the world.

Prix Versailles is a prestigious international awards organization that celebrates architecture around the world. Each year, the Prix Versailles awards are presented at UNESCO. In 2026, two airports in the United States were recognized along with five others around the world. Pittsburgh International Airport and San Diego International Airport Terminal 1 were named as laureates by Prix Versailles.

Both airports recently underwent major improvements. Pittsburgh International Airport was totally reimagined in 2025 and opened to the public on November 18 after nearly four years of construction. San Diego International Airport's new Terminal 1 officially opened on September 23, 2025. Both projects are being celebrated due to their stunning and functional designs. If you're someone who loves architecture, opting to depart from or connect through either of these airports will be a wonderful experience.

What's new at Pittsburgh International Airport

The new and improved Pittsburgh International Airport was designed to provide the best possible experience for travelers. "This terminal was built by Pittsburghers, for Pittsburgh. It showcases our region's innovation, craftsmanship and hospitality while creating an airport experience that reflects the character and pride of our community," the CEO of Pittsburgh International Airport, Christina Cassotis, said in a recent statement. Prix Versailles took notice. The prestigious recognition as one of the World's Most Beautiful Airports came after a project that took around five years and cost nearly $1.7 billion.

Pittsburgh is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and stunning waterfalls, and the new design of Pittsburgh International Airport is intended to celebrate that natural scenery. The roof dips and rises like rolling hills and is meant to evoke the Allegheny Mountains. There are also multiple steel columns that were made to look like trees inspired by the forests. Massive windows throughout the space mean that there is ample natural light. Passengers can enjoy relaxing on outdoor patios where they can get a breath of fresh air before catching their flight.

"Being named to the Prix Versailles World's Most Beautiful Airports List is an extraordinary honor and a testament to the vision, talent and determination of everyone who helped bring our new terminal to life," Cassotis said.

What to expect at San Diego International Airport's new Terminal 1

Construction on San Diego International Airport's new Terminal 1 began back in 2021. The original terminal was built during the 1960s, so a modernization was well overdue. The project was finally completed in late 2025 and cost a whopping $3.8 billion. It is expected that 10 million passengers will utilize the terminal in its first year open.

"The vision, creativity, and dedication of the New Terminal 1 team resulted in a terminal that reflects the spirit and character of San Diego. Our goal was to deliver an airport experience that authentically represents our region while providing exceptional service to travelers. This global recognition affirms that vision and helps showcase San Diego to the world," Atif Saeed, President and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, said in a statement.

The airport was designed by the architecture firm Gensler. The designers aimed to create an updated airport facility that could support travelers current needs and accommodate more travelers in the future. They tackled practical problems like parking, security, sustainability, and transportation while also incorporating aesthetically pleasing design elements. Artists were commissioned to create installations, and the overall design is inspired by San Diego's landscapes. An outdoor terrace offers the opportunity for fresh air and beautiful views of the city. "We are incredibly honored that our new Terminal 1 has received this prestigious international Prix Versailles recognition," Saeed said in a statement after being named one of the most beautiful airports in the world.
