Texas' Record-Breaking Amusement Park Ride Is The First Of Its Kind And Opens In 2026
Roller coaster lovers know there's nothing like the rush of that first ride. The sensory overload is as much a part of the experience as the views. The wind roars in your ears as you hear the track rattling and everyone around you screaming in simultaneous delight and fright. It's just the right combination for adrenaline lovers — and that's exactly what people are expecting at the new Tormenta Rampaging Run roller coaster at Six Flags Over Texas.
The park, located in Arlington, Texas, approximately halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth, was the first Six Flags location in the United States and has long been one of the most thrilling theme parks in Texas. Known for its exciting innovations, it was home to the first log flume ride in the world, and was among the earliest parks to add Broadway-style entertainment to its offerings. The Tormenta Rampaging Run aims to continue in that tradition of innovation as the first of its kind: it is the first "giga dive coaster" in the world. Originally scheduled to open in June 2026, the ride has since been delayed, though anticipation remains high for the attraction.
The coaster already claims six world records, according to the Six Flags website. It reaches 309 feet in height, making it the tallest dive coaster ever built, before dropping riders into another record-breaking 95-degree beyond-vertical plunge that falls 285 feet. It's also the fastest dive coaster at 87 miles per hour, and the longest in this category at 4,199 feet. The coaster features the highest-ever Immelmann inversion at 218 feet, and the tallest vertical coaster loop at 179 feet, completing a sequence of record-breaking feats for thrill-seekers.
What is a Giga Dive Coaster?
The Tormenta Rampaging Run is slated to be the first giga dive coaster in the world. It bridges the gap between two distinct types of coasters: the dive coaster and the giga coaster. The former is designed to follow a towering lift that eventually peaks at the edge and hangs for a few seconds before plunging vertically. The suspense that comes before this dive is what sets some of the country's scariest roller coasters apart from the rest.
A giga coaster, meanwhile, applies to rides that reach heights between 300 and 399 feet. While there are giga coasters that account for some of the world's tallest, the new Tormenta Rampaging Run is the only one that combines both elements to create a hybrid option for riders. With both extreme height and a pause before a steep descent, the ride adds an entirely new dimension to the roller coaster experience.
The Tormenta Rampaging Run roller coaster is situated in the theme park's new Rancho de la Tormenta plaza, a themed Spanish village inspired by the Running of the Bulls tradition. Here, guests can enjoy the record-breaking coaster, dine at the Cocina Abuela restaurant, and immerse themselves in the richly detailed setting. Those hoping to experience real roller coaster thrills may find exactly the adrenaline rush they crave when the ride finally opens to the public.
