One Of Texas' Busiest Airports Is Going Through Major Changes In 2026

With more than 20 million passengers passing through each year, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is one of the busiest airports in Texas, after Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston's George Bush. Austin is one of the best places to visit in Texas and its airport is located just a 15-minute drive from downtown. Due to a major expansion project, some travelers may experience a few disruptions at the airport, as changes are made to the South Terminal starting in the end of March 2026. The terminal, which is used by budget airlines Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines, will close its gates on March 31, to make way for new taxiways. From April 1, both airlines will operate out of Barbara Jordan Terminal, bringing all commercial airplanes under one roof for a smoother, more enjoyable passenger experience.

The Concourse B and Tunnel expansion project will add a new 26-gate concourse and two concrete parallel midfield taxiways, where the South Terminal currently stands. These taxiways will create connecting paths for aircraft moving between the terminal, runways, and other airport facilities. The project, which is expected to be completed in the early 2030s, has been created to meet the long-term demand of Austin's rising passenger numbers, and will contribute to the city's continued growth and transportation needs. Passengers flying out of Austin-Bergstrom with Allegiant and Frontier, to cities and smaller destinations across the U.S., will be the first to be affected by these changes.

While airport officials are expecting a smooth transition from the South Terminal to the Barbara Jordan Terminal, the changes could cause a few disruptions for passengers. Staff are advising travelers whose flights fall around these dates to double-check their terminal before arriving at the airport. From April 1, all travelers flying with Allegiant or Frontier should head directly to Barbara Jordan Terminal for check-in, security, and departure. For passengers whose flight leaves before March 31 but returns after April 1, shuttles will be available to transport you between the two terminals.

If you've flown from the funky southern city of Austin in recent years, you'll be used to the short shuttle ride that takes you from the main airport building across to the South Terminal. Although the switch may initially be a little confusing, finding your way around should become much easier with the new changes, with all flights operating within the same terminal. To avoid any confusion, airport officials recommend giving yourself more time and arriving early during the transition period. You should also keep a close eye on any last minute gate or check-in changes. If you do happen to find yourself with a little extra time, you could always stop off at one of Austin-Bergstrom's five best restaurants.
