A Picturesque Lake State Park In Wisconsin Boasts Amazing Outdoor Recreation And Campsites
Located along the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in the Baraboo range is the stunning Devil's Lake State Park. This area in Wisconsin is considered to be one of the top places to find the best National Parks in the Midwest – and quite rightly so, as Devil's Lake State Park is a great place for outdoor activities such as swimming, rock climbing, hunting, hiking and kayaking. Though there are no campsites directly on the lakeshore, the park is home to three fantastic main campgrounds guests can stay at. These are located just a short walk or drive from the water, and must be booked in advance, as there are no first-come-first-serve campsites available at this park.
Devil's Lake State Park is conveniently located just a 2-hour drive from Milwaukee, and around a 1-hour drive from Madison. It is located closest to Dane County Regional Airport, but those traveling in from out of state (or even from another country) can fly into Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.
Hiking, swimming, and water activities at Devil's Lake State Park
Considered home to some of the top fall hikes in the U.S., Devil's Lake State Park is a true gem for outdoor enthusiasts. The East Bluff and East Bluff Woods loop trail is one of the most popular hikes. Taking around 1.5 hours to complete, this trail is considered to be moderately challenging, and is one of the most difficult in this state park. It's definitely worth it, though, for the stunning views of the lake below and the notable stops along the way such as Elephant Rock and Elephant Cave.
Beautiful at any time of year is the park's biggest attraction, the sparkling 360-acre Devil's Lake. It is best viewed from the iconic vista point of Devil's doorway, a huge quartzite formation that overlooks the lake. This notable spot is thought to be one of the most beautiful places in America's State and National Parks.
When it comes to spending time by the lake, there are plenty of great options for a relaxing and fun-filled escape. The lake boasts two large sandy beaches where guests can enjoy comfortable swimming temperatures between June and September. Peddleboats, kayaks, and standup boards are available to rent during your stay, and fishing poles are able to be borrowed for free!
