Half An Hour From Modesto Is California's Up-And-Coming 'Family City' With An Indoor Water Park
There are numerous reasons why so many people want to visit and even live in California. From scenic hiking destinations and beautiful coastal beaches to world-class attractions, the Golden State has something for just about everyone. That said, finding lesser-known areas to check out or plant roots in can be a bit more challenging, especially when larger cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego get much of the attention.
There are some up-and-coming spots popping up all over the state, however. Manteca, for instance, has seen significant growth in recent years. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city's population grew by nearly 16% between 2020 and 2025, reaching more than 96,000 residents. Located halfway between Modesto and Stockton (roughly a 25-minute drive from each), there is plenty to love about this quickly growing spot. While locals disagree on where the city got its name from (some say it was due to a typo, while others point to the Spanish word for "butter" or "lard"), Manteca has embraced the nickname of "The Family City" to reflect just how family-friendly it is. And with its schools, parks, family-focused attractions, restaurants, and shops, there's plenty for families to enjoy.
Housing costs in Manteca are lower than the state average, making it a more affordable option for folks hoping to move their families to California. Home construction and the development of restaurants and retail shops are also on the rise here. The city even has a "Family Entertainment Zone" that's designed to draw more visitors and businesses to the area. And then there are other perks, like the relatively mild winters (though summer highs average around 94 degrees Fahrenheit) and proximity to larger California points of interest, like San Francisco (under an hour and a half's drive west) and Yosemite National Park (a great spot for a weekend getaway at just two hours east).
Manteca boasts family-friendly entertainment for all
Plenty of young families are clearly already living in Manteca (children and young people under 20 make up about a quarter of the population here), and as such, the city is already chock-full of kid-friendly activities. For sports fans, Big League Dreams is one of its most unique attractions. It features multiple scaled-down replicas of real Major League Baseball ballparks, like Fenway Park and Wrigley Field, which is fascinating in and of itself. The complex hosts everything from youth baseball and slow-pitch softball to indoor soccer, flag football, and even kickball. There are also batting cages, a kids' play area, and an on-site restaurant for whenever hunger (or hanger) strikes.
Those with active kiddos who want slightly less structure can also visit Altitude Trampoline Park. Here, kids can defeat friends in a game of Battle Beam or Basketball Trampoline Dunk, go wild on the Freestyle Run ninja course, or simply bounce to their hearts' content on the wall-to-wall trampolines. There's also Lucky Strike Manteca, a bowling alley perfect for family bowling night or celebrating a birthday with friends. Bonus: It has an arcade inside as well, for those who prefer to take a break from strikes (or gutter balls).
There are also plenty of public parks in Manteca to enjoy an afternoon at the playground or a morning picnic. Among the most notable are Graystone Park, Shasta Park, Lincoln Park (complete with a seasonal swimming pool), and Spreckels BMX Park, with plenty of ramps and hills for the bikers in the family. There's also Library Park, which is adjacent to the Manteca branch of the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library, where families can check the calendar for free children's activities and other events. And if that's not enough, families can always hit the movies at the nearby AMC Manteca 16 Theater.
The up-and-coming city's indoor waterpark remains a family favorite
Of course, arguably the biggest family-friendly attraction in Manteca is Great Wolf Lodge. While the original Wisconsin location is one of the must-visit indoor water parks across America, you can expect a similar mix of aquatic fun and family activities at its other locations, including this one. This 95,000-square-foot indoor water park is a place for year-round swimming and splashing, featuring slides, climbing features, a lazy river, as well as a seasonal outdoor pool. While visitors are welcome to check it out with a full-day or half-day pass, locals can also snag a season pass for frequent visits. The thing about Great Wolf Lodge is that even if you're done with the water, you can still find plenty of other attractions to enjoy, like the Moonstone Mine Mirror Maze, a mini-golf course, a ropes course, a Build-A-Bear workshop, and more.
For those visiting from out of town (either passing through or as a potential new home), Great Wolf Lodge also offers family-friendly accommodations, with water park admission included in overnight stays. Those looking for slightly more affordable rooms can also look on the east side of town, where there's a Holiday Inn Express and a Best Western, among others, ranging from $80 to $110 per night as of this writing.
As for getting to Manteca, Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is around an hour and a half north of the city. The next closest is San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC), roughly an hour and a half to two hours southwest of the city, depending on traffic. If you're tacking Manteca onto a longer trip to the Bay Area, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) might be your best bet, a bit over a two-hour drive via the I-580. Just make sure to add these family-friendly, bucket-list activities to your San Francisco adventure.
