The western state of Utah is unequivocally home to some of the most stunning landscapes in the U.S. Utah has six national forests that fall entirely within its borders, along with parts of two others. If you wanted to visit all of the different state parks it would certainly take awhile, because there are 46 different options to choose from. In addition to all of that outdoorsy goodness, Utah is home to the "Mighty Five." Utah's Mighty Five are the state's national parks, all of which are considered to be some of the best in the country. Each has its own claim to fame, but many outdoor enthusiasts agree that Zion is Utah's crown jewel. It's a fabulous destination throughout the year, but during the fall it becomes particularly magical.

Zion National Park was established in 1919, which makes it the oldest and first established national park in the state of Utah. People were awe-struck by the land surrounding Zion Canyon long before the United States government decided to protect it. The land was originally inhabited by Indigenous people who called the region home as far back as 7,000 years ago. Early European settlers who came upon the land called it Zion when they arrived in the 1800s, due to its inspiring natural beauty. Every season brings new beauty to Zion National Park, and each has its own special charms, but when autumn rolls around the rugged canyons are transformed by golden leaves.

The gorgeous fall foliage is reason enough to visit, but the cooler fall temperatures are also ideal for hiking and exploring the park. The hordes of summer tourists have subsided a bit, which makes the park even more peaceful. If you're looking for an autumn destination that will leave you awe-struck by natural beauty, head straight to Zion National Park.

Zion National Park in autumn is a natural masterpiece

Zion National Park covers more than 148,000 acres and attracts millions of tourists each year. In 2025, it was one of the 5 best national parks that had the most visitors and was ranked the second most popular national park in the country. The fall leaves usually peak in mid-October when the aspen trees turn a brilliant golden shade of yellow and the maples turn a vibrant shade of red. The splashes of color among the otherworldly canyons is awe-inspiring and it's perfect if you want to snap some fall foliage photos.

Autumn is one of the best times to visit Zion National Park, both for the fall foliage and for the perfect climate. Summer temperatures can be quite stifling, and aren't ideal for long hikes. Throughout September it can still be quite warm and it very much still feels like part of summer, but by October the daily temperatures usually hover between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. In November it becomes a bit chillier with an average high around 64 degrees.

Hiking is a must when visiting Zion National Park, and some of the most iconic hikes in the country are located within the park. Angels Landing is one of the most dangerous trails in the world, but it offers some of the most incredible views in the park. It requires a permit but you may have an easier time scoring one in the fall when the crowds aren't as bad. The Narrows is a beautiful canyon hike that's also extremely popular, but you'll want to check conditions before you head out because it often closes due to flash flooding. Taylor Creek is just as striking as The Narrows without the crowds.
