This Island Was Named The Safest In The Caribbean For A Stress-Free Getaway

With its white-sand beaches, tropical climate, and turquoise water, it's easy to see why tourists flock to the Caribbean. There are over 7,000 islands, 16 independent countries, and 18 territories scattered throughout the region, which can make it difficult to decide where to go when you're planning a vacation. If safety is one of your top travel priorities, then Saint Barthélemy, or St. Barts, might be the perfect choice.

Some Caribbean islands have garnered a bad reputation in recent years. In early 2025, the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, a popular cruise destination, declared a state of emergency due to violent crime. The U.S. government also issues safety warnings for Turks and Caicos due to crime levels.

But while there are some destinations to avoid if you want a stress-free Caribbean beach vacation, St. Barts is not one of them. Going (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights), which helps travelers find flight deals, ranked St. Barts the safest destination in the Caribbean, dubbing the isle in July 2026 "the pinnacle of Caribbean security."

St. Barts has low crime rates and high security standards

The French were the first to colonize St. Barts, in 1648. They sold the island to Sweden in 1784, but by 1877 the island was under French control once more. Today it is an overseas territory of France. According to Going, the island "maintains French law enforcement standards," which is one of the reasons it has remained so safe.

About 11,500 people call St. Barts home, and approximately 300,000 tourists visit each year. Residents and visitors enjoy a sense of safety. Violent crime is rare, and murders are even less common. The few crimes that do occur are mostly instances of petty theft. The U.S. Department of State has a Level 1 Travel Advisory in place for St Bart, which is the lowest and safest of four levels. Travelers are advised to "exercise normal precautions" when visiting, as the island is "generally a safe destination" for tourists. The Government of Canada and the U.K.'s Foreign Office also note that crime levels are low in St Barts.

When comparing St. Barts to other Caribbean destinations, it's easy to see why Going called it the area's safest destination. Jamaica, another tourist hot spot, was named the most peaceful Caribbean island of 2026 by the Global Peace Index, but crime statistics tell a different story. The U.S. Department of State has a Level 2 Travel Advisory in place for Jamaica and urges travelers to be extra cautious due to crime levels. While it's important to remember that Jamaica has a much larger population than St. Barts, there were more than 470 murders on the former in 2025. At the time of this writing, there had already been 372 murders in 2026. On St. Barts, the murder rate is near zero.

Planning a stress-free trip to St. Barts

St. Barts is a wonderful place to go if you want to experience all the charm the Caribbean islands have to offer. It's a favorite vacation spot for celebrities and the mega-rich. Gustavia Port is full of yachts and the streets are lined with high-end shops such as Prada and Dior. With bakeries serving croissants and baguettes, the island offers plenty of European-inspired charm. It's often likened to the French Riviera, but with the addition of pristine, white-sand beaches. The island's official language is French, although English is also widely spoken.

The entire island is only 11 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. You won't see many mega-resorts or high-rise hotels; instead, chic boutique hotels are the norm. Large planes are unable to land at Gustav II Airport (SBH), which has a runway that's just 2,100 feet long. To get there, book a flight from Puerto Rico's capital, San Juan, or St. Maarten. A round-trip flight from San Juan costs about $1,200. From St. Maarten, round-trip flights are $380 to $450. Taking a ferry from Philipsburg on St. Maarten or Marigot on St. Martin is also an option.

Accommodations, restaurants, and activities on St. Barts are mostly geared towards luxury travelers, so this isn't one of the best Caribbean islands to visit if you want to avoid overspending. But if you're willing to splurge on the region's safest island, stay in a five-star hotel. Eden Rock, which dates back to 1953, has rooms from $2,300 per night. Le Village Saint Barth Hotel is one of the island's few budget-friendly options, with rooms from around $265 per night.
