One Of Texas' Largest Amusement Parks Is Full Of Thrilling Rides And Family-Friendly Fun

You know an amusement park is getting it right when its list of awards is nearly as long as one of its roller coasters. Such is the case of Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio (which is one of America's underrated southern cities). A multi-time winner at the prestigious Golden Ticket Awards, the family favorite has been delighting visitors with its innovative, gravity defying rides since opening in 1992.

Spread across 200 acres, the park is divided into six themed areas, with many attractions celebrating Texan culture and the region's Spanish and Mexican heritage. What makes Fiesta Texas different from the other Six Flags parks is that it was built within a former limestone quarry. The surrounding cliffs have even been incorporated into several of its rides. Those include Iron Rattler, which plunges 171 feet down the quarry wall reaching speeds of up to 70mph, and Superman: Krypton Coaster, one of the park's floorless roller coasters. Regarded as one of the most thrilling theme parks in Texas, Fiesta Texas has 10 roller coasters and its fair share of other adrenaline-inducing rides. But there are plenty of family-friendly attractions too, and a chance for wide-eyed kids to come face to face with a few of their favorite DC Universe superheroes. 

When it's time to cool down, Hurricane Harbor Water Park is next door, and there's live entertainment and special events taking place throughout the year. This includes the hugely popular Mardi Gras festival and Fiesta Luz, a drone light show. Six Flags Fiesta Texas is located 15 miles north of downtown San Antonio, a must visit destination for history buffs, and is served by the VIA Route 93 bus. Unlike many parks, there's no longer a dedicated children's area at Six Flags Fiesta Texas – the family friendly rides are situated alongside the park's main attractions. For a more thrilling ride, the Wonder Woman Golden Lasso has a 90° drop and takes you up to speeds of 52mph over 1,800 feet on the world's first single rail coaster. Some Reddit users recommend heading to this ride first as capacity is low and lines build up early.

If it's drops you love, Dr. Diabolical's Cliffhanger delivers as the world's steepest dive coaster, reaching speeds of up to 60mph. Reddit user KungFuActionJesus5 said, "the beyond vertical initial drop is a great feeling and the ride gives you several other sudden airtime moments throughout which is really cool." Iron Rattler is also a favorite, but that could all change in 2027, when Fiesta Texas launches its 11th and longest roller coaster, Werewolf Gorge, for the park's 35th anniversary.

The most recent additions are CYBORG: Cyber Revolution, for a zero-gravity spinfest, SHAZAM!: Tower of Eternity, the classic drop tower, and METROPOLIS Transit Authority, a family friendly ride for Superman wannabies, which all opened in 2024. Adventurous kids will love the Road Runner Express as they race through the quarry alongside Wile E. Coyote on his eternal quest to catch the Road Runner. The thrills and spills continue at Hurricane Harbor Water Park, with more than 15 water slides and attractions. Freefall at up to 40mph on Bahama Blaster or head onto Thunder Rapids as you spiral and splash your way along this 942-foot long water coaster.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas is open all year round, with the exception of Hurricane Harbor, which is open from roughly May to September. Hours vary depending on the time of year, but in the height of summer, the park is usually open from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., with the water park opening from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m. Throughout the year, various special events and live entertainment take place, including Fright Fest, where you get to ride in the dark for extra scares, and Holiday in the Park, with festive live shows and specialty food.

Food is something you can't bring into the park, but there are plenty of eateries serving the usual burgers, sodas, and ice creams. Being a Mexican-themed park, you can also get your dose of tacos, quesadillas, and margaritas at the La Cocina de Cobre restaurant. Unlike some theme parks, Fiesta Texas doesn't have an on-site hotel, but its location in San Antonio's The Rim district means you're never far from a bed for the night, with a huge choice of accommodation ranging from budget-friendly stays to luxury resorts.
