Forget Florida, This Is America's Best Summer Travel Destination Of 2026 So Far
Florida is often seen as the ultimate domestic summer destination for American tourists. And it's easy to see why. The Sunshine State's fabulous combination of glorious tropical weather, picturesque beaches, vibrant, exciting cities, amazing theme parks, and magnificent wildlife and natural beauty is pretty hard to beat. From gorgeous coastal parks with islands that rival the Caribbean to the glitz and glamor of Miami or Tampa, Florida serves up excellent summer vacation spots everywhere you go.
But this year, Florida might not be America's favorite summer travel destination. According to a report from WalletHub, a new name has overtaken not only Florida, but Texas, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C. and Virginia, and Ohio as the ideal place for Americans to travel. Atlanta, Georgia, is ranked as the top affordable summer destination that's easy to reach, stealing the top spot from Orlando, Florida.
Atlanta is the state capital of Georgia, and the largest city in the state. It is a world-famous transport hub, and is home to Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the busiest airport in the world. With over 2,100 arrivals and departures a day to more than 220 domestic and international destinations, Atlanta's airport is a huge part of what makes it such an accessible and attractive destination. It is located on the southern outskirts of the city, and visitors can reach downtown Atlanta in around 15 minutes by car, or 20 minutes by rail.
What makes Atlanta such an attractive destination?
According to the WalletHub research, around 72% of Americans intend to take a vacation this summer, and just over a third of those plan to travel more than once. As a result, affordability is a key part of deciding where to go, particularly given the increasing costs of gas, airline tickets, and accommodation. Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst who worked on the report, said, "When picking a summer travel destination, it's easy to focus just on the types of activities you want to do or certain cities you've always wanted to see. However, choosing a destination that's not only entertaining but also affordable is important when travel, dining, and activity costs have surged so much in recent years."
Atlanta came out on top in the WalletHub rankings, partly because of the amount and variety of direct flights to the city (and the associated affordability of those flights), but also because of the diversity of attractions it has to offer. The WalletHub report noted that Atlanta has a wide selection of spas, shopping centers, ice cream parlors, and swimming pools, which are all important considerations for families when choosing a summer vacation destination.
The report also highlighted Atlanta's attractiveness as a party destination for adult visitors looking for a summer vacation with great nightlife. WalletHub pointed out that Atlanta's bars stay open long into the night, with the official last call time of 4 a.m., one of the latest in the U.S.
Best things to do in Atlanta on a summer vacation
Whatever kind of summer vacation you are looking for, Atlanta has something to offer. For families, the Georgia Aquarium is a great place to start. It's the largest aquarium in North America, and houses some fabulous sea creatures, including whale sharks, belugas, and dolphins. Sports fans will love the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame, and the World of Coca-Cola offers a surprisingly fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at one of the world's most iconic brands.
Summer in Atlanta can get hot, so finding ways to beat the heat is a vital part of any trip. The Atlanta Beltline is a beautiful green space, ideal for walking and biking, and a bicycle tour is a great way to explore the city. Piedmont Park is another great outdoor attraction, and it often hosts events, fairs, and markets. There are a bunch of splash pads dotted around the city, in spots like Historic Fourth Ward Park, which are a great place for kids to cool off, while everyone can enjoy the quintessential Atlanta summer activity of floating down the Chattahoochee River on an inner tube!
Atlanta also has a fantastic program of summer events, so timing your trip to coincide with what's happening in the city is a great idea. From the Atlanta Jazz Festival on Memorial Day Weekend, which follows 31 Days of Jazz, to the Flying Colors Butterfly Festival, Virginia Highland Summerfest, the Atlanta Arts Festival in Piedmont Park, and the Atlanta Ice Cream Festival, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
