Utah's Major Airport Is Getting A $5B Upgrade That Should Be Opening Soon In 2026
Over the last couple of years, the aviation industry in the U.S. and around the world has taken a bit of a hit, with flights canceled and major airlines shutting down. With fuel prices soaring due to global instability and concerns around safety and sustainability on the rise, air travel both domestically and internationally has been affected in recent years. However, despite some bad news and gloomy forecasts, in general, American aviation is in a good state, and there are signs that it is ready to bounce back in the coming decade.
One major indication of the health of the American aviation industry is the rise in the number of major infrastructure projects, with several airports undergoing huge expansions designed to drive demand for air travel and future-proof the industry for decades to come. One of the largest and most exciting of these projects has been underway for several years at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) in the picture-perfect mountain state of Utah. It will finally be completed in 2026, and it has the potential to transform the way Americans travel to and from the southwestern United States.
Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is located on the northwestern edge of Salt Lake City, just southeast of the Great Salt Lake in northern Utah. It is a hub for Delta Airlines, one of the airlines with the best customer service in the world. It serves over 26 million passengers every year, with more than 330 scheduled departures per day, and is generally considered one of the most important transport hubs serving the Intermountain West and the West Coast.
A brand-new gateway to the West
Salt Lake City Airport's redevelopment program is unusual among some of the other major airport projects. Rather than repurposing the existing outdated airport, this $5.1 billion project will start from scratch, demolishing the original buildings, constructed in the 1960s, and building a brand-new hub, specifically designed for the needs and demands of modern air travel.
Salt Lake City Airport's three existing terminals and five concourses were dismantled and replaced with a single terminal and two concourses, covering 4 million square feet. Alongside the new facility, a new parking structure with 3,600 spaces was constructed, as well as an economy parking lot and new paving for the airfield itself. The new layout will allow for fewer bottlenecks and faster turnaround times, as aircraft will have more space to taxi. The new terminal will also be state-of-the-art, with enhanced climate control, improved mechanical and plumbing systems, and a ground service operation that runs entirely on electricity instead of fossil fuels.
Salt Lake City Airport is a Delta hub, and the airline has ambitions to transform it into the Atlanta of the West, on par with its Georgia headquarters. The new airport will be a significantly more luxurious experience, with a strong focus on improved lounges and enhanced amenities. Sky Club members will be able to benefit from an outdoor sky deck offering stunning mountain views and fire pits on Concourse A, while Concourse B will be the home of the largest Delta lounge in the world.
When will the project be complete?
The Salt Lake City International Airport Redevelopment Project began in 2014, and phase 1 was completed on time and under budget in 2020, despite some regulatory changes, an ambitious schedule, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Phase 2 was also completed on schedule, and part of the brand-new concourse was opened to the public at the end of October 2023. Phase 3 contained some of the most exciting elements of the project, and in October 2024, the project unveiled a new mini-plaza, a pedestrian tunnel, new departure gates, and a raft of eye-catching art installations.
Phase 4 is the final stage of the project, and is currently going strong. The last phase will include the last 11 new gates, adding to the 10 gates that opened between phases 3 and 4. It will also complete the construction of several new shops and restaurants. Phase 4 is slated to be completed in October 2026, which will bring this enormous transformation project to a close and begin a new chapter for air travel in Utah and the Southwest.
