This Seemingly Helpful Act Of Service Actually Makes Your Hotel Housekeeper's Job Harder
Being a hotel housekeeper is hard work. From turning over hundreds of rooms per day to dealing with the worst-of-the-worst guest messes, travelers should assist housekeeping whenever they can. You may think the best way to do this is to make your bed before checking out and leaving the hotel. After all, if you make it, then they won't have to, right? Well, this seemingly nice gesture for your housekeeper may actually do more harm than good. When guests leave a hotel, the bed sheets are stripped and changed for the next guest. So, while it's not the worst thing you can do while staying in a hotel, it definitely adds extra time to the housekeeper's cleaning of your room.
The best thing to do instead is either leave the sheets unmade or strip the bed entirely. The housekeepers will have to take your sheets off anyway, so this actually makes it easier for them to turn over your room. Instead of wasting time, you may actually save a few minutes of labor for hardworking housekeepers.
How you can actually make your housekeeper's life easier
In addition to leaving the bed unmade, there are a few more small things you can do to seriously make your housekeeper's day. In your bathroom, remember to put all the towels in one pile. This can be in the shower tub, on the floor, or on top of the counter. As long as your towel pile is in view and easy to access, your housekeepers will be silently thanking you.
Make sure you pick up all of the trash in your room. No housekeeper wants to walk into a room and find pizza in the bed and chip wrappers under the sink. Try and put your trash in one bag if you can or move all the trash cans to one spot so it's easier for cleaners to take them out. An extra nice gesture for housekeepers would be to leave a tip. A tip could be anything from cash to unopened food but be sure to leave a note with an explanation so the housekeepers know it's for them. If there's no note, they may assume it was left behind and take it to lost and found in case the guest returns for their items. Following these simple tips will let your housekeepers know you appreciate them and make you a better hotel guest.
