What Tourists Need To Know About This Region Of Armenia Before Planning A Trip

Traveling to Armenia can be a fulfilling experience packed with ancient religious history, stunning architecture, and some of Asia's most underrated beaches. Most tourists flock to the capital city of Yerevan for local cuisine, art, and unforgettable sightseeing. But there are other great spots across Armenia for tourists to enjoy, like one of the world's best long-distance hiking trails. However, a recent travel advisory specifies a particular Armenian region that U.S. citizens should avoid on their upcoming travels.

On September 5th, 2025, the U.S. Department of State issued a travel advisory for Armenia, specifically in regards to the border with Azerbaijan. While most of Armenia is given a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution assessment, areas around the Azerbaijan border are listed at Level 4: Do Not Travel. Because of heightened armed conflict and military action, the U.S. Department of State recommends travelers stay away from the border region. The advisory states, "Exercise caution on roads near Armenia's border with Azerbaijan. Some parts of the road may cross international borders without warning. Checkpoints may control roads or authorities may close them to travelers without notice."

What this advisory means for tourists traveling to Armenia

Most of Armenia, including the capital city of Yerevan, remains at a Level 2 due to the potential for armed conflict.  It's important to note that many popular vacation destinations, such as Brazil and France, are also at Level 2. So, travelers shouldn't write off the country altogether, but it's important to take proper precautions before planning your trip.

The U.S. Department of State recommends that travelers review Armenia's Country Security Report and check the CDC's travel health information. This way, travelers can stay up to date with important information regarding the state of Armenia's military conflict. Travelers should enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, or STEP. This program allows U.S. citizens traveling abroad to register their trip with the Department of State, where they will receive alerts regarding health, weather, safety, and security during their trip. They will also be able to easily contact the U.S. embassy in case of an emergency. Tourists should also purchase travel insurance and prepare for emergencies in case the trip needs to be cancelled at the last minute or something goes awry while they are abroad. Travelers can still have a safe and fulfilling trip to Armenia, as long as they are aware of what areas are best avoided.
