Florida's 'Jewel Of Tampa Bay' Is Full Of Attractions, Shops, & Fun Near The Gulf Coast

If you've been pointing your vacation compass due south or north whenever you're in Florida, maybe it's time you tilt a little bit central or west. The Sunshine State's attractions stretch far and wide, and some of its gems aren't where many would expect. Safety Harbor, popularly referred to as the "Jewel of Tampa Bay," is a celebrated tourist destination offering compelling and unique experiences you can only have in Florida. The Jewel boasts historic charm, fresh special seafood, mineral springs, piers, pedestrian-friendly streets and shops near the Gulf Coast without the commercial sheen or crowds, making it perfect for visitors who want to unwind and recharge in tranquility.

Located on the western coast of Old Tampa Bay, approximately 20 miles north of St. Petersburg, and 12 miles northeast of Clearwater Beach on the Gulf Coast, Safety Harbor is easily accessible. The nearest major airports are St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport, around 11 miles south, and Tampa International Airport, about 14 miles southeast, roughly 20 minutes by car. Initially known as "Worth's Harbor," the small town changed its name to "Safety Harbor" in the 18th century to reflect how safe ships were from pirates when they reached the area.

The first settlers of the land were the Tocobaga community, who buried their loved ones in mounds. The area also hosts the Waters of the Holy Spirit or the "Espiritu Santo Springs." Named so in 1539 by a Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto, waters from the spring were thought to have healing powers, and people came from all over the world to savor them. The historic Espiritu Springs was officially declared a historical landmark and a Florida Heritage Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1964 and 1997, respectively.
