A Charming Village In California's San Jacinto Mountains Offers Outdoor Fun And Cute Shops
Visitors flocking to California typically set their sights on popular vacation destinations like Hollywood, San Francisco, or San Diego. However, California is much more than big cities. Not only is California one of the best states for hiking, it also boasts 18 National Forests, three major deserts, and 840 miles of coastline ripe for exploration. With all that open space ready to be enjoyed, it seems to go without saying that a lot of California's most rewarding escapes can be found not in its urban centers, but in quieter, more remote corners — places where nature takes the lead and life rolls on at a slower pace.
One such spot, tucked away in California's San Jacinto Mountains, about two hours from Los Angeles, making for a great day trip, is the mountain town of Idyllwild — a place just far enough from the buzz of urban life to make you feel recharged. While it may be on the smaller side, what it lacks in size it makes up for with its vibrant art scene, and seemingly endless miles of outdoor adventures.
From scenic hiking trails and cozy cabins to thrift shops, art galleries, live music, and quaint bookstores, Idyllwild invites travelers to slow down and savor crisp, clean mountain air. Plus, who wouldn't want to visit a place where the town's mayor is a golden retriever named Max? Whether your trip takes you on a mountainous excursion or one to browse handmade crafts, this high-elevation hamlet is a haven for artists, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a budget-friendly weekend escape in SoCal that feels peaceful and invigorating.
Spend time enjoying the art scene in Idyllwild
Idyllwild has continued to grow as a haven for artists and creators. Many of the local shops showcase the works of potters, woodworkers, painters, and jewelers. Pop by Idyllwild Art in the Park for an eclectic artisan market with live music, or visit year-round galleries like Middle Ridge Winery & Tasting Gallery, where visitors can enjoy local artwork, live music, and delicious wine. The town also holds a farmers' market every Sunday at town hall for those in search of local, fresh produce.
For delightful smells and whimsical gifts, stop by locally owned shop The Spruce Moose, offering items such as candles, pottery, ceramics, and art pieces. Those who delight in reading will enjoy a trip to Speakeasy Books, a cozy bookshop in a cabin-like setting that, along with specializing in books, is a fun place to listen to live music and enjoy author readings. Hunting for great items to thrift? Idyllwild offers opportunities to turn one person's trash into your personal treasure. The Owl Pine Shop and Stop Light Thrift Shop are local thrift stores where visitors can peruse the shelves for fabulous vintage finds.
After a busy day spent exploring shops, you'll probably want a place to rest your weary feet. Luckily, Idyllwild has you covered. If you're looking to spend a night under the stars, check out the Idyllwild Campground. It has 28 campsites and is open year-round. If that one is full, the Stone Creek Campground is another great spot and just a short drive from town. Those looking for a more comfortable stay can check out Grand Idyllwild Lodge (a luxurious stay in a rustic setting), The Strawberry Creek Inn (a location that feels like you've stepped into grandma's cottage), and The Idyllwild Inn (a rustic, historic boutique hotel in town center).
Explore the great outdoors
Aside from being a great place for exploring a delightful array of local shops, Idyllwild is renowned for its outdoor activities. Though the area has more than its share of hiking trails, a few stand out. Arguably the most iconic of the hikes is the Tahquitz Peak via Devil's Slide Trail, with a distance of 8.5 miles round trip and an elevation gain of 2,400 feet. Beginning from Humber Park, the Devil's Slide Trail winds through switchbacks and shaded trees, before joining with the Pacific Crest Trail and ascending towards Tahquitz Peak.
Visitors do need a permit to explore this trail, however, it's free and can be picked up outside the ranger station. Another popular hike in the region is Suicide Rock via Deer Springs Trail, but don't let the name scare you off. Though not an easy hike, this 6.7-mile round-trip takes explorers from Deer Springs Trailhead and climbs upwards through lush pine forests before reaching the top of Suicide Rock. From this point, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Tahquitz Peak and the surrounding valley — just be careful not to stand too close to the edge!
Visitors of all skill levels can spend the day exploring the rest of Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness, which boasts 14,000 acres filled with 50 miles of hiking trails and endless natural beauty. Idyllwild is a beautiful place to explore year-round! Spring and summer bring warmer weather and better temperatures for hiking and climbing, while fall and winter bring changing leaves and snow blanketing the ground. Whenever you decide to visit this quaint mountain town, Idyllwild quietly invites you to stay a while and enjoy some fresh, crisp mountain air.
