Try This Genius Trick To Keep Liquids From Spilling In Your Suitcase

You're folding and rolling clothes to fit into your suitcase. The delicate dress is nestled next to your favorite shirt, which is right on top of your favorite pair of jeans. Everything is safe and secure, you think — that is, until you look over and see your toiletries. Bottles of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and other beauty and skincare products sit in a pile near you. They're all on your general packing list, and you know you'll have to bring them, but you're worried about them opening and staining the clothes you just so carefully packed. What do you do?

Luckily, people are innovative, and apps like TikTok exist, enabling them to share their tips and tricks with the world. Mother and TikTok influencer Vicky Gilchrist shared a hack on TikTok that's perfect for travelers looking to keep their liquids from spilling. If you relate and need a safeguard for your luggage, look no further. All you'll need is a packet of balloons to make your items spill-proof.

Balloons add a great layer of protection from spills

Once you have your toiletries and pack of balloons, you can begin. Simply take one of the uninflated balloons, snip off the very end with a pair of scissors, and cover the lid of your container with the open end. That's it! Continue this method until all your toiletries are packed up with a balloon over the opening. The smaller the container, the less you'll want to cut off the balloon; the larger it is, the more you'll want to cut off.

This method is effective as it allows the balloon to catch any liquid that may escape from the bottle, therefore preventing a mess in your suitcase. And it's great for any kind of travel, be it by plane or bus. Since you're using a balloon as a cover, it fits to the size of the bottle, meaning there's no hassle when putting it on and no fear of it not fitting properly. It's simple, cheap, and won't take up too much of your time — what more could you ask for when packing?

Alternative ways of packing liquids

If you're pressed for time and can't make it to the store for a pack of balloons, that's alright. There are other tricks that will keep your toiletries from spilling in your luggage. One tried and tested way is to simply use a Ziploc bag. You cram everything into one and seal it shut. That should protect your goods for the entirety of the trip.

If you don't have access to a Ziploc bag, you can try using a plastic bag. While this isn't as effective as the balloon or the Ziploc, it offers some protection and serves as a barrier between your clothes and the liquids. Place your toiletries into the plastic bag and tie it as tight as you can.

If you want to be extra cautious, you can add the items that either have the balloon on top or are packed away in a Ziploc bag to a plastic bag, then tie it shut. This way, if any liquid maneuvers its way out of the balloon or the seal on the Ziploc bag comes undone, the plastic bag will prevent it from reaching your other belongings.
