California has a lot to offer as a vacation destination. From dramatic mountains and arid deserts to majestic sequoia forests and vibrant, exciting cities, there's a whole lot going on in the Golden State. California's coastline is one of its biggest draws, with amazing surfing, wonderful clifftop hiking trails, and gorgeous golden beaches ideal for lazy days soaking up the sun. From the scenic beaches and towering redwoods of Crescent City in the north to the fairytale feel of Carmel-by-the-Sea, oceanside vistas abound. But the best beach towns in California might be the ones you've never heard of, like Avila Beach, the Southern California hidden gem just outside San Luis Obispo, in the shadow of the Los Padres National Forest.

Avila Beach is situated in Southern California, overlooking San Luis Obispo Bay. It is 10 miles south of San Luis Obispo, and accessible from Bakersfield in around two and a half hours and Los Angeles in about three hours. The nearest commercial airport is San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP), which offers a range of domestic routes, while Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is a larger regional hub about an hour and a half away by car.

Avila Beach: A hidden gem

In April 2026, Avila Beach was named the most beautiful hidden-gem beach town on the West Coast, following a survey by HelloMillions, and it is easy to see why. Avila benefits from a delightful microclimate that brings warm, sunny days and less coastal fog than many of its neighbors. The town beach is a lovely stretch of sand framed by bluffs, while nearby Old Port Beach is a gentle crescent that's often used by locals, visitors, and their dogs.

The town itself is small but buzzy, with a quaint downtown filled with excellent cafes, restaurants, and shops, as well as some excellent wineries and breweries. One of Avila Beach's most charming landmarks is its picturesque pier. As of this writing, sections of the pier are closed off as the city debates the best way to complete much-needed renovations, but you can still walk out across the water to watch the cute sea otters playing in the surf below.

One highlight of a trip to Avila Beach has to be its hot springs. These natural mineral springs bubble up from an artesian well underground and have drawn visitors for generations, ever since drillers looking for oil discovered them in the late 19th century. The Avila Hot Springs spa has been run by the Budan family for more than a century, and boasts a thermal soaking pool, a heated swimming pool with waterslides, a restaurant, an arcade, and a range of spa services including massage.

Where to stay in Avila Beach

Avila Beach offers a superb selection of boutique hotels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals, plus exquisite spots to camp under the stars. The Avila La Fonda Hotel is one of the more luxurious and upscale options in town, inspired by traditional Mexican architecture, with eight colorful casitas just a single block from the beach.

Slightly further out of town, the San Luis Bay Inn offers stunning sea views from its position high on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, making it an ideal spot for relaxing and enjoying the peace and serenity of the California coast.

For those who want a simpler experience, Avila Beach is known for its camping options, especially its RV campgrounds. Flying Flags Avila Beach is a well-known RV spot above Fisherman's Beach to the northwest of town center, and Port San Luis RV Camping offers oceanside RV hookups for remarkable mornings and perfect sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. There are also more traditional campsites at Avila Hot Springs, too, making this a fantastic place to experience the joy of camping in SoCal.
