Goodbye Middle Seat: United Airlines' Comfortable New Seating Option Is Coming This Fall

Airline ticket prices have skyrocketed in 2026, but even though costs might not show any signs of dropping soon, there is some good news in store for passengers who purchase economy tickets. United Airlines recently announced a major expansion, and one of the most exciting perks is that Economy Plus (extra legroom) travelers may not have to worry about being squished in a middle seat any longer. 

According to data from airlines, more passengers are splurging for first class airfare even with the high costs of plane tickets. It seems like some travelers finally became fed up with crowded economy seats that make one feel like they're a sardine being crammed into a tin can. In response, many airlines are offering new options that are designed to be more comfortable for customers. United Airlines is no exception.

In a press release published on July 14, 2026, United Airlines unveiled their newest "economy class innovation." New aircraft that will be flying to international destinations will have Economy Plus seat options that offer more elbow room. The middle seat in some rows will be blocked off with a large custom table, so that each passenger in these rows will have more room and access to the shared space.

The spacious seating option will be available on one row of all of United Airlines' new Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The company ordered 50 of the planes in 2026. The CEO of United told Eyewitness News ABC7NY that "the math worked out well," when designing the new planes.

With the layout of the new Airbus A321XLR planes, the space was there to block off certain middle seats, and the company felt it would be a good option for economy customers who desire extra comfort without splurging on a first class ticket. "For some customers that want to pay a little bit more — not as much as sitting up front — but pay a little bit more to get more space, it's a great opportunity," Scott Kirby, the CEO of United, told ABC News in an interview.

"We're investing nose-to-tail across our fleet and giving customers choice and value in every cabin," Andrew Nocella, United's executive vice president and chief commercial officer stated in the press release. "The XLR is our newest aircraft and not only offers all-aisle access lie-flat seats in United Polaris® but now also includes seats in Economy Plus with extra leg and elbow room. Our customers are going to love all these new options." The company also announced a new seating option called the Relax Row in 2027, which provides a relaxing upgrade for international trips. Essentially, if you purchase an entire row in economy, you will be able to convert it into a place to lay down with a provided mattress pad after takeoff.

United Airlines' business class has been called the worst in America, but it's clear the company is trying to make some positive changes. The new Airbus A321XLR were specially designed "from the ground up," according to the press release. They are narrowbody planes that only have a single aisle and will be used for domestic and international travel. United claims they will be, "the airline's most premium narrowbody airplane, providing a new level of comfort and style for those traveling on international short- to medium-haul routes." The aircraft can accommodate around 150 passengers.

The press release explains that each XLR aircraft will have at least one row with large tables that stretch between the interior aisle seat armrest and the interior window seat armrest. It will cover the entire space that would have been the middle seat so that passengers have room to spread out. "The table is permanently fixed, with a soft leather-like covering, and two indentations for cups. And the extra space is in addition to the three inches of additional legroom already offered in Economy Plus on the XLR," the press release states. Considering United Airlines' economy customers have less leg room than people who fly Delta and American, the extra space is likely going to be a welcome change. 

United plans to begin operating the new aircraft in the fall of 2026 but they will be flying domestically within the United States for the first few months. By early 2027 the airline claims the planes will begin flying international routes. Official pricing for the seats in rows with empty middle seats has not yet been announced at the time of writing.
