A Canadian Airline Is Ending Its US Routes In 2026, Leaving Travelers With Fewer Options

Recently tourism in the United States has been seeing a dramatic decline. The World Travel and Tourism Council analyzed 184 countries in 2025, and the United States was the only one that the organization predicted would see a decline in visitor spending. In 2024, 90% of tourism spending in the country came from domestic travelers according to WTTC. The United States was formerly a popular tourist destination, but it appears that international travelers are heading elsewhere for their vacations these days. Tourism may be booming in other countries around the world, but airlines are starting to respond to the lack of demand for flights to the United States. Air Transat, a popular Canadian airline based in Montreal, recently decided to cancel their U.S. routes.

In 2025, Air Transat was dubbed the Best Leisure Airline in the World by the Skytrax World Airline Awards. It was the seventh time the Canadian company won the title. In 2022 it was also dubbed North America's Best Leisure Airline. Now U.S. travelers who hope to fly on the award-winning airline will have to do so while traveling abroad. During the spring of 2025 the airline operated nine routes to the United States. Over the months that followed that number dwindled significantly.

The relationship between the United States and Canada has deteriorated over the last few months, and the airline's decision to pull out of the U.S. market reflects the decrease in Canadian tourists traveling to the United States. The final Air Transat flights to U.S. destinations will take place in the spring and early summer of 2026.

Air Transat cancels all US routes

At the time of writing, only three Air Transat routes to the United States remained in operation. By the end of June, 2026, there will be none. The reason behind the airline's decision is due to the decrease in demand. The airline plans to focus its resources elsewhere. Fewer Canadians are visiting the United States these days, and many experts believe it is because of the tariffs that President Trump imposed on its northern neighbor and his statements about wanting to make Canada the 51st U.S. state.

After President Trump issued an executive order intended to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in early 2025, Air Transat posted a satirical article on the company website. "Air Transat announces that it is officially changing the name of the Atlantic Ocean to the Canadien Ocean. Effective immediately, the new name is featured in onboard announcements across Air Transat's network. To rally nationwide support, the company is launching a petition to make the rebranding permanent on official governmental documents and maps," the airline cheekily announced on April Fools Day. The company even created a petition on change.org.

All satire aside, Air Transat's decision to discontinue flights to the U.S. is very real. The final flight from Montreal to Orlando will take place on May 4, 2026. On May 30, 2026, the last flight from Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale will take off. The final Air Transat flight to the United States will be from Montreal to Fort Lauderdale and will take place on June 30, 2026.

Travelers from the United States are losing options quickly and ticket prices are soaring

Tourism and aviation news in the United States has not been pleasant so far in 2026, and Air Transat isn't the only Canadian airline canceling routes to the U.S. WestJet recently canceled multiple U.S. routes, including some to major cities like Los Angeles, Tampa, Nashville, and San Francisco. In total, West Jet reduced U.S. flights by over 26%. In April, Air Canada, the country's largest airline, suspended routes to New York City and Salt Lake City because of the rising costs of fuel due to the Iran War.

Experts have been warning travelers to book their summer vacations ASAP as flight prices will likely continue to increase due to the ongoing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran. So far, fuel costs have nearly doubled. There have also been alarming reports that two major U.S. airlines could possibly be merging to form the largest in the world, which many people believe would negatively impact travelers. Major U.S. airlines, including Delta, Southwest, United, and JetBlue, have increased the cost of checked baggage in response to the rising cost of fuel. According to a CNN article, United passengers are paying 20% more for each mile flown compared to this time last year.

The future remains uncertain, but it appears that traveling to and from the United States is about to become more challenging and more expensive. As early as 2024, it was predicted that budget airlines might be endangered due to rising operating costs. Now, with increased fuel costs and airlines like Air Transat pulling out of the U.S., the days of affordable travel might be over for the time being.
