Universal Orlando Is Making A Big Change Without Notice. Here's What It Means For Visitors

Visitors to Universal Islands of Adventure may be in for a rude awakening in 2026 if they were hoping to catch sight of Hogwarts Castle. The Harry Potter-themed castle, which Klook ranks as one of the most iconic landmarks in the city of Orlando, Florida, is now almost fully covered in scaffolding and construction scrims as it weathers an unannounced refurbishment. Guests entering the Hogsmeade area at Islands of Adventure are now more likely to see grey tarps flapping in the breeze than the instantly recognizable castle spires of Hogwarts. In addition to being rather disappointing in the moment, this could stymie Instagrammers looking to show the receipts of their Orlando vacation online.

A Universal Orlando representative told People, "The exterior of Hogwarts Castle is currently undergoing refurbishment that will be complete later this year." Beyond that, no precise timeline has been given for when the scaffolding might come down. For now, guests will have to drown their sorrows in free butterbeer at Universal Orlando as they puzzle over the exact nature of this refurbishment (which hasn't been announced, either). The next best snapshot available to Harry Potter fans may be the fire-breathing dragon atop a building in Diagon Alley. This area in Universal Studios Florida, which forms another part of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, links to Islands of Adventure via the Hogsmeade Express.

Over at Walt Disney World, the rival Cinderella Castle has also been undergoing repainting work this year. However, that project was announced beforehand, and it's limited enough in scope that Disney has been able to confine the cranes around the castle to mornings, so guests can still see it unobstructed in the afternoon. Universal's refurbishment of Hogwarts, by contrast, flew in under the radar like a sneaky kid on a quidditch broom, so it may take some muggles by surprise.

The original Hogwarts Castle is hiding, but the show goes on inside (and on TV)

When it opened at Islands of Adventure in June 2010, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter set a new, highly immersive precedent for both Universal and theme parks in general. At the time, the Harry Potter movie series was still in theaters, with the two-part "Deathly Hallows" concluding it in November 2010 and July 2011. Hogwarts Castle was the Wizarding World's towering centerpiece, and it's since been reproduced across other Universal parks in Japan, Hollywood, and Beijing.

The upside, even for guests making a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Islands of Adventure, is that there are opportunities in other Universal parks to stage a Hogwarts photo op. You can even see the original Hogwarts production model in London on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, which proves the most popular Harry Potter attractions aren't where you'd expect. At Islands of Adventure, meanwhile, guests can still enter Hogwarts to experience the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride — housed inside the castle. As shown in images by X user @bioreconstruct, they just won't be able to come away with a clean picture of the castle's facade.

After 16 years of operation, the renovation of Universal's first Hogwarts at Islands of Adventure could just be a matter of routine maintenance, refreshing the castle following its prolonged exposure to the elements in Florida. That said, there's been some speculation among fans that the castle might receive cosmetic changes to match it with the look of the new Hogwarts in HBO's upcoming "Harry Potter" TV series. The series is slated for Christmas 2026, so the timing for that would make sense if the powers that be are looking to unveil a new castle alongside a new dramatization of the Harry Potter books. In the meantime, Universal Orlando visitors can explore the newest corner of the Wizarding World at the Ministry of Magic, one of five immersive worlds in Epic Universe.
