This Popular Florida Airport May Soon Be Renamed After President Donald Trump
Travelers flying into one of Florida's busiest airports, Palm Beach International (PBI), may soon find the name Donald J. Trump unavoidable. On March 30, 2026, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill renaming PBI the "President Donald J. Trump International Airport." The name change, set to take effect on July 1, 2026, will be official once the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) clears it. However, this is more of a formality, with the FAA having issued a statement (via CBS News) saying: "Changing an airport name is a local issue and the FAA does not approve airport name changes ... However, the FAA must complete some administrative tasks to include updating navigational charts and databases."
President Trump's Mar-a-Lago club and home, which he's nicknamed the "Winter White House," is about five miles down the road from PBI. The airport's name change is just the latest way that Trump's presence in Palm Beach has altered the face of the town for both visitors and residents. During his first presidential term, Trump visited Mar-a-Lago around 145 times, per The Independent. In January 2026, the stretch of Southern Boulevard that links the estate with the airport was renamed President Donald J. Trump Boulevard. Trump's motorcade often travels this same road when he's flying in and out of PBI on Air Force One.
A "Trump slump" may be one reason why tourism in the US is seeing a dramatic decline. However, after Trump's second inauguration in January 2025, the president and CEO of Palm Beach County's official destination marketing organization, Discover The Palm Beaches, told The Hollywood Reporter: "Visitation to The Palm Beaches has steadily risen over the past few years because of a combination of factors including what experts refer to as the 'Trump Bump' effect specifically in the past year." This bump-within-the-slump has had a noticeable impact on traffic in Palm Beach, an affluent, palm-tree-lined, barrier-island community that's only connected to the Florida mainland by three bridges.
Life around Palm Beach International was affected even before the name change
The Independent also reported on how temporary flight restrictions over Palm Beach had become more permanent amid Donald Trump's second presidential term, turning Mar-a-Lago into a no-fly zone even when he was away. As of January 2026, most flights out of PBI are now being routed north of the estate. This has increased the noise over some homes in the neighboring city of West Palm Beach, an under-the-radar foodie paradise on Florida's Atlantic Coast. In March 2026, F-16 fighter jets even deployed flares in the skies, while the FAA issued a ground stop at PBI, as a civilian aircraft violated the temporary flight restrictions. At the time, the president was holding court at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach.
West Palm is where PBI is located, and on its website, the airport now has a noise FAQ and a page for those affected to lodge noise complaints. Before he first took office in 2017 and the FAA redirected flights away from his estate, Trump had reportedly filed three lawsuits — all of which were dropped — concerning plane noise over Mar-a-Lago. The Town of Palm Beach also has its own webpage up which alludes to the president as it details the planned traffic impacts "when persons under the protection of the U.S. Secret Service are present."
To date, these impacts have included both road and bridge closures, effectively trapping some Palm Beach residents on the island at times unless they want to brave the bottleneck. The closure of South Ocean Boulevard, also known as A1A or Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway, has even forced some residents to drive off the island and then back on just to get across it. While locals have faced extended commutes, travelers may also want to keep potential delays in mind as they head from PBI to places like The Breakers, the Florida resort considered one of the most romantic in the world.
Trump and Mar-a-Lago continue to send ripples outside PBI
According to Politico, the Florida Senate's initial $2.75 million budget recommendation for PBI's rebranding is only half of what lawmakers sought, which could signal that it will receive more funding through taxpayer money as features like signage are updated. The move to rename it the "President Donald J. Trump International Airport" came the same day that a member of the first family, Eric Trump, released video on X of Air Force One on display inside a new Miami tower: the future Donald J. Trump Presidential Library. On that day President Trump also signed an executive order to restore pay to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents nationwide. Since mid-February 2026, a partial government shutdown had left travelers frustrated over long TSA lines, as these federally funded agents went unpaid for their work.
PBI wasn't immune to the shutdown's travel effects, with local news outlet WPB 25 reporting that it had some passengers waiting up to 30 minutes for their TSA checks. Meanwhile, South Ocean Boulevard's closure — once a periodic inconvenience for Palm Beach motorists — is now indefinite in wake of the ongoing Iran war, as the Secret Service clamps down further on possible security threats around Mar-a-Lago.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump has called Mar-a-Lago the "Center of the Universe," and like his second inauguration, it's served as a Big Tech magnet, with famous faces like Elon Musk, Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos parading through it. Since Mar-a-Lago is a private club with million-dollar memberships, tourists and news crews have been relegated to spots across the bridge and on the smaller adjacent island. Amid the visitation frenzy, PBI ranked as the U.S. airport with the second most delays in 2025 (via The Palm Beach Post), with runway construction contributing to that alongside the president's comings and goings.
