The US Is Warning Travelers To Reconsider Visiting This Mediterranean Destination

If you're traveling to Europe's "Island of Love" in the near future, you may want to rethink your plans. On March 3, 2026, the United States Department of State issued a Level 3 — Reconsider Travel warning for Cyprus due to "the threat of armed conflict."

Cyprus is a popular vacation destination located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Each year, millions of tourists from around the world flock there to experience the gorgeous beaches and enjoy the lovely climate. 2025 was a record breaking year for tourism in Cyprus, with the island welcoming more than 4.5 million tourists. That's no surprise considering the beautiful European country has the cleanest water in the world for swimming. Sadly, in 2026, visiting might no longer be safe.

On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel attacked Iran after weeks of mounting tensions. In response, Iran has launched a series of counter attacks. Thus far, Iran has targeted Israel, United States military bases in the Middle East, and Arab countries that house U.S. military bases. A British military base on the island of Cyprus was also struck in retaliation on Monday, March 2, 2026.The next day, the United States issued its travel advisory.

Travelers should consider avoiding a trip to Cyprus due to safety risks

The island of Cyprus is known for its stunning scenery, rich history, delicious wine, and vibrant culture. Ancient Greeks believed it was the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. The island — which is roughly 40 miles from Turkey and 480 miles from mainland Greece — is home to people with Greek and Turkish ethnicities. The Republic of Cyprus gained its independence from the British in 1960, though the United Kingdom maintains two Sovereign Base Areas on the island that cover about 98 square miles.

It was the British Royal Air Force base in Akrotiri, Cyprus, that was struck in the early hours of the morning on March 2. Officials believe that the drone did not come from Iran, but rather one of its allies in the region. The attack came after the Royal Air Force moved radar systems, anti-drone defenses, and F-35 jets to the base.

The United States issued the Level Three — Reconsider Travel advisory in direct response to the attack. It is the second highest advisory, just under Level 4 — Do Not Travel. Non-emergency U.S. government employees and their families were also advised to leave due to the safety risks, according to the U.S. Department of State website. If you are planning upcoming travel to Europe, make sure to also note the countries considered most dangerous for a road trip
