Breaking This Unspoken Rule In Your Hotel Bathroom Is A Nightmare For Your Housekeeper

The travel and hospitality industry is full of unsung heroes. These people are often overworked, under-paid, and under-appreciated, but they show up every day to make sure guests have the best experience possible. For example, housekeepers work tirelessly to keep hotel rooms tidy, clean, and well-stocked. And while we love to relax and luxuriate during our travels, we should all try our best to make their jobs easier. This starts by being mindful of our actions in our hotel room.

Hotel housekeepers share the worst things you can do when staying in a hotel and of the top annoying habits is dying your hair in the hotel bathroom and not cleaning up after yourself. Last minute travel emergencies happen. Maybe it's a function you just got invited to or you just didn't have time in your schedule to get your hair done before you left home. In this case, the best course of action would be to find a nearby salon. Trying to save time and money by performing a DIY dye job in the hotel bathroom is almost never a good idea. You run the risk of being sloppy and the dye can leave stains on the countertops, sinks, and mirrors. Now, if you truly have no other option, make sure you at least clean up after yourself and don't just leave the mess for the housekeepers to deal with. It will take them a long time to remove and might put them behind schedule. Also, it's just plain rude to expect someone else to clean up your mess.

Little things can make your housekeeper's day

There are lots of things hotel housekeepers hate for you to do. This includes leaving trash all over your room, misplacing hotel room devices such as TV remotes, hair dryers, and irons, and leaving your room cluttered with your belongings all over the place. It's understandable that part of your brain may turn off when you're traveling and you might unintentionally make things hard for your housekeeper. But there are also plenty of small things you can do that will seriously make your hotel housekeeper's entire day.

The first, and perhaps, most obvious way to make your housekeeper's job easier is to clean up after yourself. Before you go out for the day, tidy up the space and make sure housekeepers don't need to clean around your clutter. Before your check out, throw away any trash you have (or gather it in one place if the trash cans are too small). Another greatly appreciated gesture is to gather up all the towels in the room before you check out and place them inside or near the tub to make them easier for the housekeeper to clear out. Especially when they're still damp, it's much better than leaving them on the bed or even on the balcony where they might blow away.

Keep a mental checklist of pre-check out tasks so your housekeeper doesn't walk in and feel overwhelmed. Fling the curtains open so your room is nice and bright. Make sure you get all your belongings from the safe, closet, and shower. And, when appropriate, leave a tip with a note thanking your housekeepers for their hard work.
