All of these expenses, combined with the burnout that comes from the amount of work required to survive, leave many ready for a change of pace.

With many charming, vibrant, and affordable destinations across the world, there are still many wonderful places to call home that won't break the bank, even if you're looking to spend less than $1,000 a month. Think that sounds too good to be true? We've compiled a list of 11 fantastic locations where you can live on a budget, and not just scrape by, but where you can live an enjoyable life. We took into consideration multiple factors that affect the cost of living, including housing, utilities, transportation, dining, and groceries, to determine an approximate cost of living in each location. All of these major costs had to total $1,000 or less per month to qualify for the list. We'll dive into each destination, exploring what makes it so special and breaking down the cost of living.

When compiling this list, we took into consideration multiple factors regarding the affordability of each destination, including the cost of housing (specifically the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment), groceries, medical expenses and insurance, utilities, transportation, dining out, and occasionally engaging in local events and activities. Each of these costs must total $1,000 or less per month. We also made sure that each destination is safe, expat-friendly, and pleasant.
