New Jersey's Huge Mountain State Forest Offers Scenic Hikes Amid Colorful Fall Foliage

Ramapo Mountain State Forest may not have the prominence of many must-visit destinations around the world for avid hikers, but for leafers wanting unforgettable images of autumn in all its glory, this New Jersey site is well worth the journey. With over 4,000 acres of trails, lakes, and recreation areas, this is a playground for hikers and nature lovers. Whether you are chasing beautiful mountain views or want to experience the gorgeous fall foliage, you will fall in love with the natural beauty. Ramapo is not just a forest — it's an adventure waiting to be discovered.

The forest is situated in Bergen and Passaic Counties and is easily accessible from nearby cities. If you are in New York, you can get to the forest in less than 90 minutes by car or taxi. The nearest major airports are LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, which are just about an hour from Ramapo. You could also use public transportation to Oakland (about 5 miles away) or Mahwah (10 miles away), where you can catch a taxi to the trailheads. The history of the state forest dates back to the 1920s, when Clifford MacEvoy bought land where he could comfortably fish and hunt. He built the Ryecliff house at the top of the mountain and later added an observation tower. In 1976, the Ryecliff estate became the Ramapo Mountain State Forest, and two years later, many of the original hiking trails were built.

Scenic hikes and fall views in Ramapo Mountain State Forest

As fall kicks off, Ramapo Mountain State Forest transforms into beautiful red, gold, and deep orange colors, especially along the trails. One of the highlight trails in the forest is the MacEvoy-Castle-Cannonball Trail loop, a 5 ½-mile loop that starts in the Skyline Drive parking area. The trail follows the blue-blazed MacEvoy Trail through the forests and along the shores of Ramapo Lake. As you follow the directions along the hiking trail, you can choose to follow the route to Ramapo Lake or climb the Castle Point Trail for panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding hardwood canopy. In the fall, experience the warm, vibrant beauty of colorful trees along Ramapo Lake.

Another picturesque hike to put on your bucket list is the trek to Van Slyke Castle, which is a shorter trail just over 2 ½ miles long. This trail takes you through a forested area to Ramapo Lake and then climbs up a rocky creek before leveling off at the Van Slyke Castle, which was built in 1910. You can explore the ruins of the castle or enjoy the breathtaking views of Manhattan and the Wanaque Mountains. If you visit the state forest in the fall, this trail is filled with stunning foliage.
