A Beautiful Mountain City In Utah Offers Hiking Trails With Panoramic Views & Waterfalls

In Utah's Farmington City, you don't have to move from one destination to another to embrace that awe. From creek trails to shaded canyons, the mountain city is awash with hikes that lead to or pass by breathtaking views of lakes and waterfalls, making it a must-visit destination around the world for avid hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers.

Nestled at the heart of Davis County (the county seat), Farmington City shares its western boundary with the Great Salt Lake, and its eastern boundary with the Wasatch Mountains. It's also about 17 miles north of Salt Lake City, 21 miles south of Ogden City, and 18 miles northeast of Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC).

Taking root in 1847, the town is one of the oldest settlements in the region. It was initially known as North Cottonwood, before being changed to Farmington by the Utah Territorial Legislature in 1852, when it became the county seat of the newly formed Davis County.

Hiking trails and waterfalls in Farmington, UT

Farmington City is home to some of the best hikes in the world to put on your bucket list. They offer a great way for outdoor lovers to touch base with nature, and are perfect for running, cycling, and leisurely strolls while soaking in the beauty of Davis County. So pack your water, lace up your boots, and don't forget to bring your camera or binoculars if you have them. These memories are worth capturing! The Davis Creek Trail is a good spot to start your hiking adventure. The 3-mile loop path is rated moderate, and takes about two-and-a-half hours to complete. It welcomes guests all year, and is great for jogging, camping, and hiking. Travelers will also appreciate the stunning views of the mountain town, the Great Salt Lake, and the waterfall in between.

Another popular trail in town is Farming Creek Trail, also known as Car Graveyard Hike, reflecting the many old cars you will find abandoned along the hike. Categorized as moderate or challenging but with a lot to offer, the 2.9-mile trail is ideal for running, hiking, or just enjoying what Mother Nature has to offer. The pet-friendly trail (dogs must be on a leash) is bordered by different types of rock formations and a thriving flora.

There are lots of wildflowers, shades, creek crossings, and a waterfall along the trail. To access the 40-foot waterfall, visitors have to descend a relatively steep slope using a rope. Other trails include the stunning 3.5-mile Lagoon trail that wanders through lush greenery with opportunities to spot different types of wildlife. The 3.5-mile Adams Canyon trail, on the other hand, features a cool shaded forest, a few steep areas, and a beautiful 40-foot waterfall flowing into a pool, making it great for water splashing during sun-drenched months.

Beyond the mountain city

The beautiful hiking trails and panoramic views do not end in Farmington. The nearby Antelope Island State Park, about 42 miles west, is one of the best destinations you can't skip on your trip to Salt Lake or Farmington. It features various trails that wander through a beautiful landscape, plus opportunities to spot different wildlife, including bison, antelope, and more. A good example is the Frary Peak Trail that leads to one of the highest points in the park. A stroll through the six-mile round-trip hike will reward you with stunning views of the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountains.

Another draw of tourists to the region is the Lagoon Amusement Park, about a mile north of the mountain city. The park features exhilarating rides such as "Colossus the Fire Dragon," a water park ideal for enjoying water slides or taking a breather, and family friendly options like the carousel. About three miles north of Farmington, you will find Cherry Hills Recreational Area, a great destination for family outings. The facility features a water park, a miniature golf course, a climbing wall, the Pie Pantry Restaurant, and a jungle maze.

Nature buffs will be thrilled by the Utah State University Botanical Center in Kaysville, about six miles northwest of Farmington. The center has insightful exhibits and gardens with indigenous plants. You will learn about plants that flourish in the region, and see scarecrows crafted by residents. If shopping and dining are your thing, pause by Station Park about 1.5 miles west of town. The shopping center features different types of retail stores and restaurants, such as the Cafe Rio Fresh Modern Mexican, which is known for its delicious Mexican treats such as tacos and burritos.
