This Florida City Between Tampa And Gainesville Is A Lakeside Gem With Historic Charm

Florida is a great destination for sunbathing on its white sandy beaches or fishing in the nearby Gulf of Mexico. However, the state's conducive weather conditions also make it perfect for a lakeside gateway. From Key West in the south to Amelia Island in the north, the Sunshine State is dotted with more than 7,500 lakes hosted by some of the most charming lake towns in America. Among them is Inverness, a lesser-known lakeside gem tucked within Citrus County. The city, often overlooked by most travelers, is home to stunning waterfronts, forests, fishing hotspots, historical sites, and scenic hiking trails.

Whether you are a history enthusiast, nature lover, trailblazer, or simply looking for a serene gateway, the city won't disappoint. Popularly referred to as the "Gateway to the Nature Coast," Inverness is located on the western side of Lake Tsala Apopka, which is very popular with anglers, day trippers, and boaters.

Inverness is about 75 miles north of Tampa, and can be accessed via Interstate-75 between Gainesville and Tampa. If you prefer to fly in, the nearest airports are Tampa International Airport, about 83 miles south of the city, and Gainesville Regional Airport, about 78 miles north. Before being incorporated in 1919 and becoming a city, the town was known as Tompkinsville. Uncle or A.D Tompkinsville, after whom the town was named, was a prominent settler who attracted other settlers with a saw mill and mail service. It was later bought by a company in Jacksonville and renamed to Inverness, reflecting the blue waters of the unique Tsala Apopka Lake.
