A Picturesque Lake In California's Sierra Nevada Boasts Beautiful Waterfront Campgrounds

If your idea of a vacation or weekend escape is a peaceful lakeside morning or sitting around a bonfire under starry skies on a quiet evening, the Finnon Lake Recreation Area should be on your bucket list. Nestled in the stunning Sierra Nevada foothills of El Dorado County, this California lake is the perfect family-friendly spot for an outdoor weekend in the sun, where you can pitch your tent just a few steps from the water. Whether you want to paddle across, go fishing, or wake up to the tranquillity of nature, the waterfront campground promises endless adventure.

The picturesque waterfront campground is located about 21 miles south of the historic town of Georgetown, and about 65 miles east of the Sacramento International Airport (SMF). Finnon Lake's story kicks off in the 1900s when it was built as an artificial reservoir to support resident farmers and the booming timber industry.

Soon, it became a treasured recreational spot for outdoor fun until 1997, when the dam was closed. Thanks to recent restoration efforts, it's now a peaceful retreat area with beautiful campgrounds, thriving wildlife, and breathtaking scenery. Finnon has become the perfect escape for nature lovers, weekend campers, and families who want to explore the outdoors.

What the Finnon Lake Recreation Area has to offer

Looking for California's coziest waterfront camping spots? You can enjoy large shorefront campsites at this scenic California lake famed for its fishing scene, waterfront camping, and kayaking. Just don't forget to bring a fishing rod if you are an enthusiast, a kayak if you are a boater, or hiking boots if you are a trail junkie.

For campers, the recreational area features only 18 campsites (it never feels crowded), each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and easy access to clean restrooms and water. A maximum of two vehicles are allowed on each campsite; if you have more, you can park them in the overflow area. The lake is also pet-friendly, so you can bring your fur baby. Just make sure they are on a leash and pick up any field muffins! If you are into fishing, the lake has trout, bass, and bluegill waiting to be reeled in.

The Mosquito Volunteer Fire Association-owned recreational area also features a 27-hole disc golf course, offering visitors a chance to enjoy the gentleman's game. If boating is your thing, the area allows you to explore various boating activities while enjoying its breathtaking views. Don't forget to bring your binoculars for bird-watching as you kayak around the lake. Who knows, you may be lucky enough to spot bald eagles, herons, and even ospreys. The best part? It only costs a one-time fee of $10. However, it's important to note that while it's okay to use electric motors and inflatable boats on the lake, gas boats are prohibited. For the adventurous, you can give hiking a shot. Explore the 1.3-mile circular trail near Placerville, which follows the Finnon Reservoir Road around the recreation area.
