Kauai's 'Secret' Beach Is A Secluded Paradise That's Only Accessible By One Hiking Trail

The chain of the Hawaiian Islands undeniably allures many, bringing in wanderlust adventurers and dreamers with its vibrant aloha spirit, legendary surf breaks, and rich cultural tapestry. It's a slice of paradise for those in need of an intimate connection with the island's rugged and natural beauty, without resorts nor crowds,  and with palm-tree-lined paths leading to sandy beaches.

Kauapea Beach is a well-kept secret and thus a sanctuary of raw, unspoiled beauty, easily escaping the busier shores and locations of Kauai's more popular destinations. Tucked away near the quaint and humble town of Kilauea, this expansive stretch of coastline offers about 3,000 feet of powdery golden sand, all cradled by towering cliffs, volcanic rock, lush greenery, and swaying palms. The beach's rugged charm is enchanting. With gentle waves crashing against rocky outcrops, volcanic lava rock walls anchoring the western edge, and the picturesque Kilauea Lighthouse perched atop the sea cliffs to the east, it's postcard perfect and timeless. 

The calm atmosphere will envelop visitors, with it's crystal-clear waters offering perfect vision to the soft, sandy ocean floor, tide pools teeming with marine life and a charming waterfall for a full value tropical paradise. In summer, turquoise waves invite swimming, snorkeling, bodyboarding and other water activities, but currents can be strong. The winter brings mightier swells and lures in advanced surfers to test their chops. Sunbathing and reading enhance the quiet charm this beach offers. Visitors can wander the shore and uncover hidden sea caves, beach comb to collect delicate seashells, or pack a picnic to enjoy beneath the palm trees. 

The trail-only access adds to the beach's mystique and deters the throngs and crowds of people to reward those with an adventurous spirit desiring a sense of discovery and solitude. As the sun dips, the beach transforms into an intimate escape, delighting those who stay to watch the cotton candy-colored sky come alive for a brief moment.

The path to Kauapea Beach is an adventure in itself. It's accessible only by a steep trail just over a half-mile one-way near Kilauea. To reach the trailhead by car, drive along the Kuhio Highway toward Kilauea and turn right onto Kahlihiwai Road. From here take the first dirt road on the right. No formal parking lot exists, and visitors park along the roads end near a private residence. The unmarked trail is moderately challenging and steep, winding through wild plum trees and lush tropical flora. Visitors and locals note that the trail can be quite slick when wet and advise to bring a sturdy pair of shoes and take caution on the way down. There are plenty of large roots that can cause tripping hazards, so take your time. For most, it takes about ten minutes to reach one of the best secret beaches on Earth.

For the best experience, visit from May to September, when the ocean is calmer and more ideal for swimming, other water activities, and sunbathing. Winter provides rough waters and strong currents which require caution. Early mornings or late afternoons, especially on weekdays, will provide the best opportunity for solitude and fantastic photo opportunities of the sea cliffs, lighthouse, sunsets, and rugged natural beauty of the area. Secret Beach does not have any facilities, nor lifeguards. It's important to pack all your essentials before heading out.

For a seamless visit, bring a second pair of shoes to leave in the car upon your return (as your first pair might be covered in mud from the hike, the only downside of this place!), and try to arrive early, as there is limited parking.
