Reasons Rick Steves Says Train Travel In Europe Might Be Better Than Driving

One of the big questions any tourist has when visiting Europe is: How am I going to get around? Should I rent a car or take the train? Travel expert Rick Steves has the answer. From his best selling guidebooks to his iconic public television series, Rick Steves has provided top tier European travel tips to millions of tourists. And when it comes to the train versus car question, Steves says that train travel might be better than driving depending on the kind of traveling you want to do.

Writing for his blog, Steves says, "The European train system shrinks what is already a small continent, making the budget whirlwind or far-reaching tour a reasonable and exciting possibility for anyone. The system is generally slick, with well-signed stations, easily accessed schedules, and efficient connections between popular destinations." European trains can connect you to almost anywhere on the continent you want to go. Whether you're taking in the enchanted attractions of Prague or looking for fun day trips out of Florence, you'll find European trains to be clean, convenient, and fun to ride.

European trains are comfortable and stress-free

European roadways, though generally well-maintained and efficient, require your full attention and can get confusing, especially if you're a first-time traveler. According to Rick Steves, while train travel can be less flexible than driving owing to set time schedules and destinations, the experience on the whole is far less stressful.

He writes: "On the train, you can forget about parking hassles, confusing road signs, speed limits, bathroom stops, and Italian drivers. Watch the scenery instead of fixing your eyes on the road, and maybe even enjoy a glass of the local wine." Because you know what your destination is going to be and when you are going to get there, you can kick back and enjoy the ride.

The other upside to trains is that you are not confined to your seat the way you are in a car or airplane. You can get up, stretch, move around, and most importantly, use the bathroom. And since European trains cut through so much of the continent's beautiful countryside, you can take in the dramatic views without having to stop to pull over. Overall, thanks to the interconnected railway lines, ease of travel, and general affordability, train travel is definitely an excellent option for traveling through Europe. Steves himself recommends the train from London to Paris as being just as fun a journey as either destination.

Train considerations when traveling in Europe

As with any visit to Europe, there are things to consider before you skip renting a car and travel across Europe via train. If you prefer packing light, are wanting to cover a great geographic range, and are alone, trains are going to be an excellent option. Trains are also great if you're hopping between Europe's great cities. However, there are some ways in which trains are limited.

Rick Steves explains: "Driving is ideal for countryside-focused trips ... and is a godsend for those who don't believe in packing light. For two or more people traveling together (especially families with small kids), renting a car can be easier — and cost less — than traveling by train." A car also allows you to find areas and towns that are less crowded with tourists, where you can typically find cheaper accommodations than hotels in big cities. Steves says that countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, and Slovenia are all excellent for driving.

If there is one country where train travel would be more recommended than driving, it is Switzerland. The Swiss have an amazing railway system that takes you practically anywhere in the country. It's also decidedly safer. As a mountainous country with winding roads that require a decent amount of skill and nerve to drive, taking the convenient train or the iconic Postauto bus system is the way to go in Switzerland. Again, however, it all depends on the kind of traveler you are and the kind of trip you're planning. So don't stress. Enjoy the journey!
