Watch: Dane Reynolds Pulls Surfing's "Gnarliest Turn"

Dane Reynolds is widely regarded as one of the best surfers in the world—Kelly Slater once even called him just that. But he doesn't often compete, thanks to a distaste for organized competitions that he thinks stifle his style and creativity.

Reynolds got in the water earlier this month, though, at the Reef Hawaiian Pro on the North Shore of Oahu, and pulled one of the craziest stunts we've ever seen. A layback, inverted turn on a wave that engulfs him in whitewater. Even surfing legend Shane Dorian was blown away, saying:

I'm gonna go out and say that's pretty much one of the gnarliest turns I've ever seen in my whole life. I'm seriously baffled about what he just did. There's probably one person on earth that could do that turn, and it's Dane Reynolds, pure and simple, that's a fact.

Too bad it only earned him a 7.75. But c'mon. Shane Dorian's opinion > Those judges (at least this time.)
