Google-Hike The Grand Canyon Right Now
This past October we reported that the traveling garden gnomes at Google Maps would be taking their magic panoramic backpacks to the Grand Canyon.
And now, behold, the results:
Five teams of two Google Mappers apiece divvied up the main trails of the canyon's south rim over the course of three days. Using Google's Trekker backpacks, which are rigged with 15 cameras atop a mast, the hikers explored the Bright Angel Trail, the South Kaibab Trail and the South Rim itself.
Check out the gallery here, or drop the little yellow man wherever you dare. You could lose several afternoons: they mapped 75 miles of trails and surrounding roads, incorporating more than 9,500 panoramas into the final product.
Not a substitute for your foiled vacation plans, to be sure, but beautiful nonetheless.
