Voter Tampering Ruins X Games Fan Favorite Contest

The Fan Favorite aspect of the Real Snow X Games competition was canceled due to "vote tampering." The winner of the contest would have received a $10,000 prize. That prize is now being divided among the eight competitors. ESPN made the announcement Sunday, Jan. 26.

According to fans, the system allowed multiple votes per user, skewing the data. One suggested solution is a mandatory login, linked to an email account, which would prevent mass votes by one person.

The Real Snow contest began in 2011, as an addition to The Real Series. The fan component enabled viewers to cast a vote for their favorite competitor after watching a minute-long video. The professionally judged competition ended Thursday, Bode Merrill took gold.

There was no mention of the fan vote cancellation on the X Games Facebook or Twitter page, as of noon on Monday.
