Goofy Snowboard Stances—What's The Deal?

When Sochi gold medalist Kaitlyn Farrington interviewed with David Letterman last night, one of the opening questions was about her snowboarding stance. She explained that she rode with her right foot forward and that was considered "goofy." He asked why it was called goofy and she (and presumably most people watching the interview) didn't know how the stance got its name.
