Asia's New Iconic Destination Is A Bridge Perfect For A Romantic Valentine's Day Photo

If you find yourself in Southeast Asia, specifically in Vietnam, this Valentine's Day, there is one iconic destination you cannot miss. The "Kiss Bridge," located in Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island, is the perfect place for a photo-op with your significant other. Unveiled on December 22, 2023, the Kiss Bridge, which is called "Cầu Hôn" in Vietnamese (translates to "proposing marriage"), is certainly one of the newest and most amazing bridges around the world.

Separated by only 12 inches, people can stand on the opposite north and south sides of the Kiss Bridge, suspended over the waves of one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Vietnam. A romantic smooch or embrace can "bridge" that small gap between the two halves. At night, the bridge lights up with LED lights, creating a magical atmosphere for an evening stroll together. The protective border at the tip is made of ultra-clear glass with a near-invisible 96% transparency, making pictures look like an optical illusion.

The unique design of the half-mile-long Kiss Bridge involves two separate bridges stretching toward each other but not quite touching, inspired by the two pointing fingers in Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam" at the Sistine Chapel in Rome. It was also influenced by a Vietnamese folk tale called "The Legend of Nguu Lang and Chuc Nu," about two lovers separated against their will by the Jade Emperor, only to meet once a year at O Thuoc Bridge. Needless to say, the Kiss Bridge is both innovative and profoundly symbolic.

A meeting of love at Kiss Bridge

Located in the Sunset Town neighborhood of Phu Quoc, the Kiss Bridge is a collaboration between tourism development company Sun Group and Italian architect Marco Casamonti. It took 5,000 tons of steel (half the amount used for Paris' Eiffel Tower) and continuous planning and work since 2018 to bring the Kiss Bridge to life. The "Golden Bridge" in Da Nang, with two giant rock hands holding a 492-foot-long golden overpass, is another kindred project by the Sun Group. It was an enormously successful venture, taking the world and social media by storm, bolstering Vietnamese tourism. The Kiss Bridge will likely have the same effect on Phu Quoc.

For couples, the Kiss Bridge offers an unparalleled backdrop for Valentine's Day photos. The contrast of the modern steel structure against the natural beauty of Phu Quoc creates a stunning visual. Whether capturing the sun setting behind the bridge, posing on the illuminated walkway at night, or popping the question (wink, wink), the bridge has become popular for every romantic occasion. On the other side of the Kiss Bridge is a regular pedestrian bridge, allowing the photographer (or self-timed camera) to have the ideal spot for that perfect, symmetrical shot. The best time to visit Kiss Bridge is at sunset or after dark when it's beautifully lit. Between December 24 and January 1, the sun sets right in the middle of the two halves!
