VIDEO: Huge Whale Migration

Whale watchers near San Diego, California caught a once-in-a-lifetime sighting of a massive whale migration Sunday.

A passanger on the whale watching boat Christopher captured the raw footage above. You can hear people on the boat trying to count the whales, and experts now believe there were 20-25 gray whales in total—the largest pod seen in the area in nearly three decades.

Each year, approximately 15,000 gray whales pass by San Diego on their trip south from the Arctic to Baja, Mexico where they breed and calve. The 10,000-mile migration is the longest taken by any animal on earth, according to the National Park Service. They migrate back north in the spring.

Each gray whales can grow up to 50 feet and weigh 40 tons.
