VIDEO: "Dolphin Stampede" In California

On a recent whale-watching expedition near Dana Point, Calif., a group of tourists got an added bonus when a massive pod of common dolphins surrounded and swam with their boat.

Someone aboard the ship had a video camera and the good sense to capture this amazing footage of an estimated 1,000 dolphins speeding along through the water. They even filmed from the ship's underwater viewing area—a shot that gives another cool perspective.

Although the video doesn't say what type of common dolphin is in the footage—short-beaked or long-beaked—the short-beaked dolphins are more common near Dana Point. These cetaceans can travel in pods of up to 5,000, according to the Ocean Institute.
