VIDEO: Surfing NYC After The Storm
This short film, Beach 87th St./Surfing After Sandy, about the Rockaway surf community in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, is a good reminder that the storm's effects are going to be with us for a long time. Filmmaking brothers Lukas and Jesse Huffman, both surfers, use their entrée into the NYC surf scene to bring us the stories of three Rockaway residents holding onto their dignity after their homes were all but destroyed.
Interviewee Keone Singlehurst, who is originally from Hawai'i, speaks to the community's tenacity:
"The New York surfer is a different breed, I think, and they've made it a place you want to live, a place you feel a part of. ...I think the surf community took a hard shot in the face, but in Rockaway we're hard to kill."
Only a week after the storm, they're hitting the waves again in order to "rinse the whole storm off."
