10 Things You Should Never Carry Through Airport Security

If you want a stress-free experience through airport security, do not blatantly disregard TSA policies; this will only result in more of a hassle for you.

Before discussing the things you should never bring through airport security, you should educate yourself on airport safety tips. For instance, keep your personal belongings with you at all times, don't befriend just anyone, and never get drunk at the airport bar.

According to the TSA, 40 percent of passengers screened in 2015 received some more form of expedited screening. That being said, it's time to learn about the items airport security prohibits you from carrying through – poisons, flammable items and full-sized aerosols, just to name a few.

Large amounts of money

If you can help it, don't carry large amounts of money through airport security. There have been claims that TSA stole money from people when they were patted down. According to abcnews, in February 2012, a TSA agent stole 5,000 in cash from a passenger's jacket at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Aerosols

If you are traveling to a job interview, wedding or birthday party, it may be tempting to bring an assortment of aerosol toiletry products with you on the plane. It's important to remember that full-sized containers are not allowed. However, travel size products are only allowed in limited quantities and they must be stored in containers 3.4 ounces or smaller.

Jewelry

Simple jewelry like a small necklace or ring is okay to wear. However, bulky jewelry is a huge no- no. Who wants to have to remove all of their jewelry while standing on line anyway? Plus, if it's expensive, the last thing you should do it drop it in a tray and leave it behind you as you walk through. There is a chance it could possible get stolen.

Containers larger than 3.4 oz.

This is one of the most important TSA rules to abide by – do not attempt to bring any liquids in containers that are larger than 3.4 oz. The Transportation Security Administration explains that any liquid, gel, cream, aerosol or paste that alarms during screening will require additional screening. So your best bet is to check any of these items to avoid unnecessary hassle while going through security.

Poisons

Don't even attempt to bring any type of poison through airport security – pesticides, arsenic or weed killers, just to name a few. These poisons are not only hazardous to bring on an airplane but than can be extremely dangerous to your health. According to research, weed killers specifically may be linked to health ailments and diseases, some of which include infertility, Parkinson's and cancers.

Souvenirs

You bought a souvenir as a keepsake, so why risk getting it taken from you at airport security? Snow globes specifically will be taken from you because of the liquid inside the globe. It's likely over the 100ml limit that you're not allowed in your carry-on luggage, according to refund.me. The smart thing to do – put all souvenirs in your check-in bag.  

A pocket full of change

Now, this one seems like common sense, but we have all been there before, standing online waiting patiently for the person in front of us to empty every last coin out of his or her pocket so that he or she doesn't get stopped by the metal detector. Don't be that person. Avoid this altogether by simply emptying your pockets before you get on line. It will save you a ton of time.

Flammable items

Flammable items such as gasoline, lighter fluid, flammable paints and cooking fuel are not allowed on the airplane. These items are expensive, and quite frankly, not worth getting taken away from you. If you really need them, wait until you reach your destination and buy them.

Certain foods

Believe it or not, there are tons of foods that are prohibited to bring through airport security. Some of them include soups, salad dressing, gravy, wine, liquor, beer, maple syrup, jellies and jams. However, there are also foods you can bring but are subject to additional inspection – cakes and pies (Consumerist).

Hold on to your ID and boarding pass

Always carry your ID and boarding pass as you walk through airport security and never place it in the tub. Anything can happen, they can get lost in the mix, or someone else may pick them up by accident. These items cannot be replaced, and without them, you will not be able to board your flight. Therefore, don't risk it, just hold onto it.
