How To Plan An Off-Grid Getaway
By MELISSA SZARO
Going off-grid doesn't necessarily mean you'll be skimping on basic comforts or sacrificing the quality of your vacation as you can cater your trip to fit your needs. Embracing an off-grid lifestyle of simplicity, sustainability, and self-sufficiency can feel empowering and invigorating while reducing the carbon footprint of a usual vacation.
The Benefits of Going Off-Grid
The first step in planning your off-grid adventure is deciding where you want to go, as these getaways are possible in any location such as beaches, cabins, mountains, hot springs, deserts, or treehouses. Making a list of the things you can't go without (such as a bed) can help in your decision-making process.
Decide Where You Want To Go
It's important to consider what amenities you can not live without, such as a toilet, or will you dig your own; is there drinkable water available or a way to cook and store food, or do you need to plan ahead for that? Like any vacation, you'll want to do a little research and planning to know what to pack to be prepared.
No Service and Fewer Amenities
Unlike utilizing a campground with a host, bathroom facilities, fire pits, and other resources, off-grid or dispersed camping has no fees and almost always guarantees seclusion. Once you have an area in mind, give the local ranger a call to find out if there are any restrictions in the area you choose, like places not to camp or fire limitations.
Go Off-Grid Camping
If sleeping on the ground is not for you, rent a camper van or RV — some even come fully equipped with all of the gear you will need for a trip. Aside from the amenities they offer, vans and RVs provide respite from nature when you're hit with less-than-ideal weather.
