Crazy Old Film: Shark Fishing From The Goodyear Blimp
Organizations such as The Pew Charitable Trusts and the World Wildlife Fund have worked hard to change attitudes toward sharks, and the footage above is a reminder of why this is so important.
One of Smithsonian's most popular videos of the year shows odd footage from 1934 of anglers reeling in a shark from the Goodyear Tires blimp.
In the video, recorded near Fisher Island, FL., a shark is dragged across the surface of the water at high speeds before finally floating limp into the air. The final footage shows the shark hanging next to the man who presumably reeled it in.
This video is not only an interesting piece of history, but also a great reminder of how far we've come with the ethical treatment of wild animals.
