See Gray Whales

A gray whale baby boom has led to an explosion in the number of calves spotted off the California coast. Through the end of April, more than twice the number of 2011 calves had been spotted off of Point Vicente as mother-calf pairs make the longest migration of any mammal—10,000 miles from Baja California north to their Arctic feeding grounds. If the trend continues, this year could break the record for the most gray whales spotted since the ACS-LA Gray Whale Census and Behavior Project began tracking in 1984.
