PHOTOS: Surfers Out Of Water

A professional surfer out of the water sometimes seems like a fish out of the water—almost unnatural and confusing. Especially because so often we only see that person in the waves, it can be weird to imagine what the pros do in their down time.[slideshow:571]

I've been documenting surfers for many years now and have found that these moments create some of the best imagery. The stories that are most intriguing are able to bring that surfer down from a pedestal to show them experiencing the world—just like anyone else.

The following images are a few of my favorite surfers in between sessions. Whether they are on route to surf, joking around, or taking time to do anything but surf, nothing can be more interesting than catching fish out of water.
