The Most And Least Patriotic States In America, According To A New Study

Annually on the Fourth of July, we celebrate our independence from Great Britain with perfectly barbecued burgers and fireworks. However, some states show their patriotism more than others through acts of voting, volunteering and participating in community activity.

In a new study, WalletHub compared all 50 states across two dimensions — military engagement and civic engagement — using 13 differently weighted metrics including number of military enlistees, veterans, adults who voted in the 2016 presidential election, volunteer rates, trial and grand jury participation and more.

Using that criteria, results show that red states tend to be more patriotic than blue states, but New Hampshire is the most patriotic state in the union, followed by Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska, Maryland, Utah and North Dakota.

The least patriotic states are New Jersey, New York, California, Texas, West Virginia, Florida and New Mexico.

When you break it down, WalletHub's data shows Georgia with the highest number of military enlistees and Minnesota with the least. Alaska has the most veterans per capita and Utah has the least. Vermont has the most Peace Corps volunteers and South Dakota has the least.

Furthermore, Maine had the highest percentage of voters in the 2016 presidential election, while Texas had the least. Utah has the most volunteers of any state and California has the least.

Regardless of where you live, stay safe this Independence Day, and pay special attention to your four-legged friend who may or may not be triggered by twinkling explosions of color in the sky. Here's how to survive this year's festivities with pets.
