Last-Chance State Park Fun

Due to $22 million in budget cuts, California recently announced it would close 70 of its 279 state parks at the end of June. But thanks to a $250,000 donation from the Sempervirens Fund, a nonprofit conservation group, you'll be able to climb, hike, bike and swim in one of California's most beloved state parks, Castle Rock, for one more year.

The park, located on the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains in the South Bay area, is home to climbing crags that Chris Sharma cut his teeth on, the start of the 30-mile Skyline to Sea Trail, steep canyons and hushed redwood and madrone forests.

So venture out to California and experience Castle Rock State Park while you've still got the chance. For a taste of what the park has to offer, check out this moderately difficult, 6.5-mile loop hike that takes you past stunning sandstone formations and even more stunning views of NorCal's rolling hills.
