Julian Wilson Wins At Rip Curl Pro
Julian Wilson took home his first-ever world tour event win today at the Rip Curl Portugal Pro. He bested Brazilian Gabriel Medina in the finals with an at-the-buzzer eight-point ride.
"I'm overwhelmed right now," Wilson said after the judges. "I'm over the moon right, I don't know what to say."
And neither did Medina—though words, for him, were unnecessary. As the camera panned to the 18-year-old, he had tears welling up in his eyes.
"I lost to Gabriel (Medina) on the buzzer last year in France and to beat him back again on the buzzer, I don't even know how to describe the feeling," Wilson said. "Now we're even."
Both Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning were eliminated before the quarterfinals, but each maintained second and third place overall, respectively. Joel Parkinson finished third in Portugal and extended his first-place lead.
The ninth (out of ten) events on this year's tour will kick off on November 1 in Santa Cruz, CA.
