Climber Fred Beckey Wins Lifetime Achievement Award

One of the stars of the 2013 Outdoor Inspiration Awards was mountaineering legend Fred Beckey.

Beckey received a lifetime achievement award at the event held on Jan. 24 during the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Beckey, 90, is also the author of numerous mountaineering books and has completed more first ascents than any other athlete.

Check out the video above to learn more about the mountaineer's amazing life. Beckey's parents brought him and his brother from Cologne, Germany to Seattle, Washington when Beckey was just three years old. He began climbing in the Cascades, but went on to summit peaks across the globe.

Every year, Inspiration Awards are given to honor individuals, groups and companies that motivate others to become active in the outdoors. The 2013 winners included The Sierra Club, Mission Outdoors volunteers and Bill Sweasy—the CEO of Red Wing Shoe Company.
