Big Wave Save

Freight Trains, the famed surf wave in Maui's Ma'alaea Harbor, is safe. On Monday, the Surfrider Foundation, which has advocated protection of the wave since 1990, announced that Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers were permanently giving up on their plans to extend the breakwater.

Environmental groups and local surfers have long thought that the proposed breakwater extension could damage nearby coral reefs, and diminish the near-perfect right-hander. But it now appears Freight Trains, so called because it's considered one of the world's fastest waves, is safe.
